Went out to dinner the other night and ordered a Macallan's on the rocks (sphere of ice). Dinner and service was outstanding but when I got the bill I noticed a 3.00 charge added to an already steep 16.00 charge for the scotch. Is this common? This wasn't in New Orleans but on the sleepy northshore. I get that bars and restaurants may pour a little more for neat or on the rocks than what's generally poured in a mixed drink but I feel like 16.00 has that covered? You’re most likely getting a 1.5 oz pour if you order something “neat” but 2 oz. if you get something on the rocks. So you’re paying for the slightly extra amount of booze.

I've seen it before and it is obnoxious. I don't like being nickle-dimed. I use cubes in my bourbon or rye and I think a lot of guys do, so why is this a mystery? Charge one price.

Stuff like this makes me think they had a consultant in recently that gave them some "revenue maximizing tips" or they just don't know how to run a business. The next step in my train of thougths is if they don't know how to run a business, do they know how to keep my food stored and prepared properly or am I going to get sick?

Not a good look.

This is a valid complaint that needs to be shared on online reviews. It’s ridiculous.

Not sure why this is down voted.

At the place I worked at a decade ago, we charged more for a rocks pour because we indeed poured more.

So are you saying if I pay for a 2 ounce pour of GTS, you are only pouring me 1.5 and charging me for 2oz?

Did you ask the server about this? Was it on the cocktail menu?

Seems ridiculous on its face value

Because I have never seen the price of a pour of alcohol vary on a menu depending on if its on ice or not. The $10 bourbon is $10 whether its poured in a glass by itself, on an ice cube, or on my head.

If a rocks pour costs something different, it should be stated on the menu.

Didn't ask the server because I didn't notice until after we left and didn't look at the cocktail menu. I'm aware of the heavier pour defense but the 16.00 charge for the liquor is already steep IMO.

I have a friend of a friend in Jacksonville that’s sells clear ice (large spheres and cubes) to restaurants. I think he told me they sell for $0.75-$1.00 per, so my guess is whatever restaurant you went to might be buying them instead of making them and passing the cost (plus some) along to you.

What restaurant? Did the $3 charge specifically say ice?

As a bullet point under the drink.

Macallan 12.......16.00
Rocks.........3.00

That’s crazy. Not that it even matters but did you request a sphere?
