My favorite is Papaya King on 86th in Yorkville. Shake Shack is good stuff though.

I think an honorable mention should go to Camp Washington Chili, in Cincinnati. Cincinnati-style coneys are unique and an acquired taste, but I find myself craving them every once in a while. I also wish they'd put my skyline chili's outside of Cincy.

1. Portillo's in Chicago
2. Gray's Papaya in NYC
3. Varsity in Atlanta

Can't go wrong with any of those.

These looked pretty damn good on man vs food in Arizona:

"Bacon-wrapped hot dogs are grilled, then nestled in steamed bolillo rolls and topped with pinto beans, chopped tomatoes, onions, mustard, mayo, and jalapeños. Other variations could include any of the following: shredded cheddar, queso fresco, cotija cheese, salsa verde, and guacamole."

My favorite is grey's papaya. Perfect drunk food at 3 in the morning. I like mustard only on my dogs, not a fan of all kinds of exotic toppings. Never had a dog at shake shack (always got a burger, which is solid).

My favorite hot dog to buy is Hebrew National. Many years ago Baton Rouge had a great hot dog place on Florida Blvd. The place was called LUMS and they sold hot dogs that were steamed in beer. It was in front of the Old Rebel Shopping Center.

I judge a hot dog like a pizza...plain. A good pizza joint should have an excellent cheese pizza, just like a good hot dog joint should be good plain (with mustard), and not depend on fancy toppings to make it good.
