That's because you're in Houston instead of in Austin. That's like having "authentic Cajun" food in New Orleans instead of in Lafayette.
This is why Austin is always on the list of most overrated cities. People literally think the same food tastes better there.

Hook me up with a Round Rock/Taylor rec. Heading there soon and want to add on to the standard Torchys, Louie Mueller, and Salt Grass (it's in the parking lot of the hotel).

I can make a strong argument for a chimichurri skirt steak. It is one of my favorite beef dishes. Is that considered tex mex?
No. It is Argentine.

Ok one block north of Louie Muellers is an old gas station converted into a Mexican joint that's good, on 2nd Street in Taylor west side across from Taylor Auto Credit is another really good Mexican joint. On 79 coming into Round Rock on your left just before or right at Sunrise is a red building also good. The other two places I used to eat at when I lived in Thrall are gone now :sigh:
Fereris on 95 (bbig green building on left by NG armory) is solid comfort food

Thanks. I'll drive in the vicinity and hope I run across them.

So far, I've been to El Real (best so far), papacitos, and Monterey's. I'm sure there's gotta be something better than I've tried so far. Hopefully something near midtown or the airport.

That place was particularly bad. But it was close to my site, and someone from work said it was good. I'm afraid of what I'm going to do to the toilet later tonight.

When your food comes out before you get your chips and dip... it may be premade and heated in a microwave. Just saying. They have closed multiple locations the last few years. Why don't you look up recommendations that are on this board weekly? You suck

Oh you will have a full fledged fecal fiasco so have some wet ones ready.

Texmex can be great or bad...and I find that the more popular a place, the worse it is....i.e. Matt's in Austin....and Dallas. Mia Cocina in Dallas is the gold standard for most people here but it is average on a good day. I will agree I generally like NewMex better than Texmex. When I cook enchiladas at home they are stacked with green or red sauce....or Christmas sometimes.

Well, El Real and Papacitos both are highly rated. And I must have missed the weekly Houston TexMex recommendation thread.
And on the sucking part.... If you say so. I'm sure as an Aggy, you have some kinda radar for all kinds of sucking.

I do remember a good place my cousin took me to in Austin. It was a popular spot, I think in South Congress.
