Tailgating at UGA ... need intel.

Southern (yes Southern University in Baton Rouge) is playing UGA in 2 weeks. Going to tailgate, and I'm sure more than a few of you guys have been to Athens.
What kind of rules and restrictions do they enforce? The school's website says "no turkey fryers" ... that could be very literal, or to someone else it could encompass any and all propane fryers.
I don't trust everything on the website, because they even say that their rules (ex: no tents or canopies can go up before 8am on game day) are in line with other SEC schools, even going so far as to say LSU has the same rules.
I laughed.

You were right to laugh.
I don't have specific information, but I do "know" they are more restrictive. A couple of years ago the university president went ballistic over trash on the campus and threatened all sorts of nonsensical changes. Not sure how much went through from a practical standpoint.
I also think it depends on which parts of campus also.
Dawgs, chime in.

We just stayed in the bars downtown which backs up to campus. There is no reason to tailgate like we do down here. The rules for actual tailgating are strict. Also, DO NOT jaywalk in Athens!!!!! I'm serious. You will go to jail. Last, there is no such thing as a go cup. You cannot drink alcohol while walking the streets of Athens. However, it s one of the best game day experiences outside of Baton Rouge. Have fun and enjoy. (Don't jaywalk)

As much as everyone loves Athens, that place is corrupt as hell. They fund the entire county off of the students-MIPs etc.

I second this. I've never seen people so scared of jaywalking in my life like I did there. I was told that the police don't hesitate in giving tickets for it.
The tailgating rules are more strict than at LSU and a lot more tame in comparison. We didn't set up our own tailgate, so I'm not the best to chime in on the specifics. Just wanted to reiterated what Coach said about jaywalking and open container.
Athens is a great college town and the strip of bars does not disappoint.

Some drunk undergrad pushed me into the street, it was a crowded sidewalk, right in front of a cop in an effort to get me in trouble. The cop saw the whole thing. Gave the kid an MIP and wrote him the ticket for jaywalking. He asked if I wanted to press assault charges. It's like their 1 rule

Depends on where you are at. North campus is pretty restricted because all the old buildings and shite. They will enforce everything on north campus and they are strict about not setting up early there.
Other places there are very few rules. The greatest concentration of people will be on Meyers Quad.
Where do you plan on parking, etc and I'll try and point you in the right direction.

Athenslife, I have no idea. I live in Lawrenceville, but I haven't been UGA'S campus . Anything you recommend is appreciated. I do know that the SU sections are 144, 101,102 and 103 possibly.
I'm an SU alum, so as soon as this game was scheduled last year people started hounding me to facilitate a tailgate.
I gave in.
Now I have to figure out the what, where and how.
You guys have already given me valuable information that I need to pass on to the SU Alumni.

Not tailgating related but I enjoyed visiting the Terrapin Brewery on the edge of town. If you like craft beer be sure to hit that up.

And Creature Comforts downtown

Watch out for the strip joint downtown. They will kick you out if you mistake the bathroom for the girls changing room, just saying.

Ok. A lot of it depends on your age and what you want out of your tailgate. Unfortunately, it's likely to be a noon game and that is a little bit more Of a damper on proper tailgating.
First off, you can park for free in some places on east campus. First come first serve. There are buses to th stadium from there. Some people do just tailgate out of their car or near the deck for that reason but there won't be a ton of people.
The busiest place will be Meyers quad. For the southern game, it probably won't be too full but that's where you'll get your college kids. For the southern game, you'll aso find service tailgates there.
The old hotspot on north campus is where they are really strict. But it's also the most scenic. So if your coming with prepared for, that might be the place but anything but tents and chairs and tables is pretty much banned. A guy at the one I was at last year had issues with campus pd.
My favorite places are kinda out of the way fields. Inbetween pharmacy and forestry is nice and behind geology is pretty, but there will be maybe one or two tailgates there. Not very crowded. Overal, everything is very spread out.
I wish you were coming up for a bigger game for a more festive experience (too many people who come to the game from Atlanta) but you'll have fun regardless. They will be strict about the time you can set up and only charcoal cooker and they will be very strict on north campus.
Any other questions, let me know.

You said "only charcoal cookers" ... no propane burners?
We were gonna do either a Jamb or a Pastalaya.

if it helps you out any, the big LSU tailgate spot was here in 2013. Great spot with fairly limited police sightings.
Athens is a great trip.
