Sushi Masa is the Golden Corral of Baton Rouge sushi joints

I hadn't been to Sushi Masa in quite a while, as Sushi Yama has been the go-to for the GF and I, with Geisha in Denham being in the rotation when we are in that area.
My friend and his wife invited me to Sushi Masa since my GF is out of town and I was happy to accept the invite. We went at 6:00 on a Saturday and there was already a 20 minute wait. The place was hopping so that's a good sign.
My first gripe is the layout of the restaurant. Tables are sectioned off into like four quadrants and its a cramped, loud, and stuffy dining experience. There was about a 10 degree difference where we waited for a table and where we ate.
Our waiter was super nice so no complaints about service. He did his best and several tables around us had him running.
The food, on the other hand, just wasn't that good. We got several things, and over-ordered like one typically does at a buffet. But the main theme was the hot appetizers were cold and the sushi was room temperature. Just obvious stuff is made and is sitting around for someone to get it. The waiters, God bless them, can't really keep up since these tables are ordering so much food at once.
Our waiter knew we liked the green mussels, and he put in a big order for us. They came at the end of the meal and were all cold. Appreciate the effort, but there is no pacing to this meal. Food comes randomly and you get it when you get it.
The sushi itself...small and bland. A menu mostly filled with rolls deep friend with cream cheese. Just not my thing and had me missing some of the delicious stuff at Yama.
But what really turned me off was the crowd. Kids running all over the place and obnoxious parents either ignoring them or screaming at them. Just a crowd I don't like to eat around.
Is it a value? Yes, I suppose it is depending how much food one can put down for a set price. But as I get older it's just not really my thing anymore. I went home, bloated and miserable, and vowed to work my arse off on the treadmill the next day.
Sushi Yama, I'll never betray you again.

No, Kaminari is the Golden Corral of Baton Rouge sushi joints. Masa is a national treasure. I have never once had any of the problems you just described (other than the wait), and there are plenty of non-fried rolls on their menu.

I had to learn the hard way about the dangers of buffet sushi. Diner beware.

I ordered a few of the standard favorites that I like (rainbow roll, red dragon roll, etc.)
Tiny and bland is the best way to describe them. You get what you pay for, I guess.

just order 2 rolls. You can order as many as you want, so it doesn't matter that they're tiny. When I go in, I typically get the seaweed salad, a couple orders of tuna tataki and my buddies and I all split a bunch of rolls.

I thought the sushi fad would eventually die off. Guess I was wrong.

Sushi Masa is just plain awesome in my book. When I want to feel like a total glutton, that's my go-to. I get about 5 rolls, plus some apps/small plates and go home stuffed to the gills.
My go-tos are Double Crunchy, Double Spicy, I-10, Snow White, & Baby Tiger. Only one has cream cheese, and none are deep-fried.

We are at the Walmart phase of the sushi fad. Now it is so ubiquitous that hipsters no longer eat it. The high quality places will slowly go out of business and leave only the buffets. In 10 years the average person will wonder why sushi was ever popular.

When I can order $100+ worth of menu items for $25 I will always be happy. Masa may not be Yama or Umami, but it sure as hell isn't the worst sushi in BR.
Also, I do not order anything fried or filled with cream cheese (maybe occasionally I'll get the LSU roll), and there are plenty of options, so I don't get that complaint at all.

So whats the problem?

Yeah, it's not very good.
Yama blows away everything in BR. Just expensive as frick. That tiger roll is too dank

Sushi Yama is my go to sushi restaurant, but I've always wanted to try Sushi Maza.

As it should be, it's the best.

It's good on a budget but not even close to the same level of quality.

The complaint is that the food isn't good, is poorly executed, and either comes out lukewarm or cold.
What's the point of having dozens of items to choose from if they can't be executed well because it's all about volume?

Kamados was great around 2005 or so. The ones on Sherwood Forest and Bennington were solid.

Went yama the other night and it was amazing.
Sushi buffets sound like something for fat people that cant afford a decent restaurant.
Pass.
