Sounds weird, not healthy. Salt, pepper, maybe butter or grated cheese.

I was eating breakfast once with a friend who happened to be african-american. He proceeded to open 2-3 sugar packets on top of his grits. I looked at him like WTF???

He said just matter of factly, "Oh yeah, this is a black thing. You didn't know?"

I didn't until then.

In my experience it's always been a Yankee thing. Or more specifically, the habit of someone who didn't grow up eating grits.

Many folk in the military get exposed to grits when they eat their first breakfast in a chow hall. They treat them like Cream of Wheat or Malto Meal and add sugar.

My wife is the only person I've ever seen do it. Her mom is to blame, though. She completely screwed up my wife's taste buds and understanding of what is normal for many others. For examples, the first time I brought home tortilla chips and salsa, she got mad because I didn't bring home Ruffles. She said, "Who eats tortilla chips with salsa?" I said, "Mexico..."

My 8 year old cousin puts brown sugar in hers and I think it is very strange.

I just stick with salt, pepper, and butter.

I had a guy that I went to college with that is from the Delta of MS and he always put grape jelly in his. We all thought he was crazy and he said everyone he grew up with in MS did this.

Mom fixed our grits like that when I was kid, but I noticed that Dad ate em with salt, pepper, and butter, and I started eating that way when I was about 10. Some of my sisters still go with the sugar.

I don't like sugar on my cream of wheat, either, but my wife got the kids started on them this way and now they won't eat it without sugar.
