CARBONDALE, IL (AP) – Southern Illinois University has a new accredited degree in fermentation science to train future brewers, distillers and vintners.
The Southern Illinoisan reports the Illinois Board of Higher Education approved the new Bachelor of Science degree in March. Matt McCarroll, director of the Fermentation Science Institute at the university, says students will start the major in the summer.
McCarroll said in a news release that rapid growth in craft brewing has led to demand for fermentation scientists with scientific training and coursework focused on brewing science. He says students will be “well prepared” to get jobs.
According to McCarroll, fermentation science involves chemistry, plant biology, microbiology and agricultural sciences.

Thanks, but no thanks. I'll pass. I'm taking my sommelier test in two months.

Raises the conundrum that underclassmen would be unable to sample their own product.

I remember hearing how LSU had a brewing class a. couple of years ago. Half the class dropped immediately since it was mostly a bunch or microbiology and organic chem involved.

I wonder if upon graduation they will realize that brewing an IPA is admitting failure?

Yeah I think Tin Roof was supposed to be involved with that at LSU. The tards got involved and had it shut down.

If you are going to do it, do it right and go to U.C. Davis. Master Brewers Program

I remember seeing a piece about this on Brew Dogs. Seemed pretty awesome.

The IBD exams are no joke. One of my co-workers at Arthur Andersen quit to pursue the master brewer program at Davis. He complained the IBD exams were tougher than the CPA exam. The knowledge of Chemistry is what made them so difficult.

There is a community college about 3 miles from me that started a brewing program. I thought about doing it for fun til I saw it is 177 hours. I didn't take that many hours for my degree at LSU.
