School me on the Gonzales Jambalaya Festival

Read through the rules last night, but I've never been. If I'm reading this correctly, everyone gets the same exact ingredients and seasonings and not allowed to bring any of their own. Assuming everyone cooks their rice correctly, wouldn't you just end up with a bunch of jambalayas that taste exactly the same? What am I missing?

Huge assumption, and very difficult over a wood fire
They provide the seasonings but the cook decides how much
The color is very important, they are looking for the light brown color of a paper bag
Chicken only, no sausage

Light brown? So they look down on dark jambalayas?

Very much so
The festival rules get a lot of hate on here, and I can see their point, but the festival was designed by the creators of it to carry forward the traditional Gonzales Jambalya, and they did not want it to morph into something else so the rules are by design to maintain that. Nothing wrong with making your own signature changes to your pot of Jambalya, but it will not win a contest judged by the JFA.

I can sort of understand this, but in that case it shouldnt be referred to as the jambalaya "world championship," but rather the "Gonzales town championship."

They don't have to use them all.
Also, they aren't rules. Merely guidelines. If you ain't cheating, you ain't trying.

Yeah, I wish they would add an open competition to see how creative people could be.

That's how abominations such as spaghetti "jambalayas" are made
