It's lame but smart move. You don't want some PR nightmare on your hands. Nip it in the bud before you have black lives matter spray painted across your building

Last week, Red's Chinese changed the name of its most popular menu item. The fried chicken dish was called General Lee's Chicken until a diner questioned the prudence of honoring the former Confederate general Robert E. Lee.

This is fricking ridiculous.

quote:

Harrell's prepared statement in its entirety: "It was brought to our attention that the name of the cocktail could offend others. While our intent was to reference the rum trade and the origin of the ingredients, we understand that this term has dual meanings. It was removed immediately from the menu out of respect and support for all."

And this is just as bad. Too many people just looking to be offended.

Yea, instead just let these wackos control what things can be called. Where does it stop?

This is more of a political topic than food topic.

It's bullshite. The triangular trade - as mentioned in the article - not only refers to slaves but also the rum trade. But because people refuse to see past their own surfaced opinions and because people are prone to using violence and vandalism, we have to police thoughts and words.

Good thing that Chinese lives don't matter or they'd be having to change the name of the restaurant too.

When will the madness end?

Probably shouldn't serve Sex on the Beach drinks or screwdrivers, either.

You can't remove every reference to slavery ever. Keep the name, provide a description of what it was and everyone learns a little history. Might spark discussion.

Look I think it's bullshite too. All I'm saying it's easier as a business owner to just change the name than put up a fight and deal with the headaches caused by some douche looking to get famous like Lolis Elie

I keep waiting for Walking Man Brewery to change the name of their black IPA. It's currently called, "Big Black Homo".

I've never even heard of that one. I'm not a shot person, though. I like to enjoy the taste of my cocktails (well, cocktails probably should be changed, too) and reach my plateau over time.

A guy I knew in college was the head bartender/manager at a place in Cambridge, MA called the Friendly Toast. Apparently one of the drinks on the menu was called 'strange fruit,' which incidentally is also the name of a song by Billie Holiday about slaves being lynched. One of the local SJWs attending Harvard came in and was apparently the first person in who knows how many years to make a connection between the drink and the song. Inevitably, she ended up waging a social media jihad against the place for being racist (because they didn't know it shared the name with an obscure song from 60 years ago). Never mind that it's Harvard and who knows how many left wings academics and minorities came in and committed microaggressions by not recognizing the 'offensive' origins of this drink, but I digress. This non story picked up steam from all the local news outlets and my old classmate ended up having to quit. Absolutely disgusting.
