As an avid coffee drinker, I’ve decided I’d like to start grinding my own beans. Looking for recs on a decent grinder, nothing fancy or expensive. Also looking for the best places to buy fresh beans, local or online, and some good brands to try. I prefer more of a dark roast type. TIA

you want a burr grinder, preferably with a 2-part mill

I have the same Oxo, it's been going strong for probably 5 years

It does throw some grind around but that's probably normal. When I got it there weren't a ton of good burr grinders available for the consumer market, I assume there are more now.

Industry standard for home grinder is the Baratza Encore. Capresso Infinity is another similar and popular option. Have heard good things about the OXO too.

I got the Capresso and have had no issues for going on two years now.

Baratza Encore.

What I have, but probably more economical options for someone looking.

I would agree that the OP should just spend the money so he never has to worry about burning the motor up and not having a grinder later on.

This is the main draw of the Baratza and why it costs more. I believe it’s the only one that can be repaired if it breaks and the manufacturer warranty is maybe a bit better.

I have the Capresso Infinity as well, it's done its job for a few years.

Only issue is a small amount of grounds inevitably miss the bottom container and land in between the side walls.

Also have the Capresso (black). Has been working well for about 8-10 years now.

It's not a huge problem but it does do this. Every now and then I blow mine out with compressed air. Been using it for about 4 years now and never had a problem with it. I recommend the Capresso here too

Same. I just recently purchased a new bean canister for the top, because it was dropped and cracked. Cheap to replace, and this machine has worked well going on 7 years for me

I've had a Baratza for 2 years, it's great. I do all whole bean and grind just before brewing. Also all dark for me and I drink it black, people who put stuff in it don't actually like coffee. The ability to change grind size is fun for switching equipment from drip to french press to cold brew.

Definately a burr grinder! When I started grinding my own beans I went with a cheap blade grinder as an experiment. I found the results so much better than pre-ground that I stopped there thinking it was good enough. Then my wife bought me a burr grinder and it was like re-discovering fresh ground coffee.

tl/dr: don't be me, save yourself the time and go direct to a burr grinder
