I bought some pork belly about a week ago and yesterday went to vacuum pack it. When I opened the packaging it came in, there was a smell. It wasn't a sour smell or spoiled meat smell, but there was a noticeable scent to it. I have never done pork belly before and didn't know if this was normal.

I've found pork will sometimes have a bit of an off odor to it, especially when buying 2 Boston Butts in the cryovac packaging.

I've never had any issues with using them. I'll simply just rinse it off in cold water and use paper towels to dry it off. A lot of times it's just the juices from the meat that can give it an off smell.

ETA: I don't usually keep pork in the fridge for a week before opening it. I usually take it right out when I get home to repackage it to freeze or to put to use.

This happens with a lot of cryovac meat. If it was spoiled it would knock you down. Rinse it with cold water and let it sit it should be fine.

Like others said, rinse it in some cold water. If it's still funky after a good rinse and drying, chunk it.

I opened a pack of ribs and thought it smelled like ton of farts but cooked them and ate them.

It’s almost a sulfur/ fart smell. It happens often, it’s not bad it’s just been in the cryovac for a while.

This. Bought a rancid pork loin once.

It's a singe your nose hair kind of smell, not just a small scent.

I'll also echo that it's pretty normal for cryovac pork.

I always cold rinse and pat dry cryovac'd meat.
