Phil's Oyster Bar is coming back

Phil’s Oyster Bar, a longtime Baton Rouge staple, is set to reopen later this year in the Southdowns Shopping Center.
The restaurant, which will be run by Anthony and Jordan Piazza, the sons of Phil’s owner Gus Piazza, will be located in the space formerly occupied by Thai Kitchen. Ironically, Thai Kitchen moved to 4550 Concord Ave. in late 2015, which had been the last location for Phil’s.
Phil’s is set to open in late summer to early fall. The Piazza brothers said they will serve all the popular items from the old menu, using the same family recipes, as well as adding some new dishes.
“We couldn’t be more excited to bring Phil’s Oyster Bar back to Baton Rouge. We have been planning this for years and we look forward to serving fresh seafood to our customers in a place that our Dad would be proud of,” said Anthony Piazza.
Known for its raw oysters bar and fried seafood, the original Phil’s Oyster Bar was a Mid-City staple for decades. The restaurant moved from its Government Street location to Concord Avenue in 2004 and remained there until Gus Piazza’s retirement in 2007. Piazza died five months after the restaurant closed.

Good, they should have left Government Street.
That said Thai Kitchen will regret leaving Perkins.

I think they're enough of a draw to overcome that location. And it's not that awful with the traffic light. Plus, while there are a lot of seafood places in town, there are just a handful of Thai places.
Confession: I graduated from LSU in the early 90s and visited Baton Rouge regularly before moving back in 2004. I love oysters in any form. But I've never eaten at Phil's

Good, I've been in BR since 2001 and never ate at Phil's.

Dammit. No longer live in BR.

Never got to eat at the original. Hope not to repeat the mistake.

The original was part of just about every other trip we made to Baton Rouge to see my grandfather. On the off trips, we'd go to Gimanco's Italian Restaurant- also closed now, IIRC

Missed many a Friday afternoon class sitting at Phil's on Government Street.

Another classic I missed. Going to school broke sucked.

Anthony still a bookie? Will they bring back the back room card games?

Mom and Dad would drive in and treat us to dinner about twice a year. Usually Mike Anderson's or Drusilla's.

I doubt it, that game is now held at another dining establishment, after a stop at Primo's for a while before it closed.
MK Wong's Chinese Inn on Airline used to also have a poker game in a side room by the cash register in plain view with the door open in the 80s and 90s.
I miss BR having an OTB in the early 1990s, Gus and Shelly held court at their table, they were there daily..then again Shelly had one at Serops for lunch almost daily too.

Served BR best stuffed mushrooms in it's heyday, and loved their rotating pie display.

Awesome deal. Best of luck to Anthony and Jordan--two good guys.

Like the original Phil’s Oyster Bar, the new space will have a “Back Room.”
