I will probably need some more in the next couple of weeks, I ordered some from Rec-Tec when I originally purchase my grill. Before I reordered more, I wanted to see if you guys had any recommendations on if there are any brands considered to be better?

I can get a 40lb bag of Rec-Tec pellets on Amazon for $38 which doesn't seem bad to me, but if there is a better quality product out there within $5-10 of that range I'm all ears. TIA

Side bar question....

What type of pellet grill do you have?

I've been debating buying a Traeger over a more expensive Kamado Joe/Green Egg. One of the knocks i heard on pellets was that you just didn't get the same quality smoke you get from coal/stick. Thoughts?

The mix they sell at Sam's club is pretty good imo, and it's $14 for 40lbs.

The quality of smoke you can get from a pellet can't really compare with wood/coal smokers. You can still make some damn tasty food on them. I find they excel at making chicken.

I wouldn't trade my Traeger for my Weber Smokey Mountain charcoal smoker, it's not even close for traditional smoking. A stick burner is just another level but thats a level of pain in the arse I'm not willing to go through for the backyard.

You can buy a $20 ez tube, or whatever they are called. Perforated tube that is closed off at one end and you fill it with pellets and light it. Then place on your grill grate which will give more of a smoky flavor. I’ve never used one but only read reviews.

I've always heard good things about Lumber Jacket pellets. I ordered a few bags while I wait for my grill to ship

I like the Louisiana Grills competition blend. You used to be able to get it from walmart for around $20-$30 for a 40lb bag. You can also get a good deal on the Traeger blend at Costco.

RecTec's are really nice I looked at those before I bought my Pit Boss but the Pit Boss was a lot friendlier to my wallet LOL.

I have a Kamado and a Camp Chef Pellet. What you've heard is right. You just won't get the quality of smoke from a pellet that you would from a Kamado style grill. If it is a long cook and I don't feel like the hassle of lighting the grill, I go with my pellet. It is pretty much my go-to and pretty dam fail proof for ribs. If you do go with a pellet, you can try Mojo Bricks to help add some additional smoke flavor. But all in all, nothing beats the grill flavor from a kamado.

Lumberjack seems to be the crowd favorite. Slender pellets and very minimal dust.

Having used Traeger pellets for at least 15 years I hafta say I like theirs best. The perfect mix they sell on Amazon has also worked well. I tried the Lumberjack on a long brisket cook and found creosote on my lid when i finished. Maybe just a bad batch. I dunno

I just entered the pellet grill world myself. I have a stick burner, WSM, and a Primo Oval XL. The pork shoulder I did this weekend on the pellet grill was pretty close to the quality of the others. When you factor in the convenience, it is a no-brainer.

I got a bunch of pellets with my RecTec grill when I first got it. When I ran out, I went to Lowe’s and got the Weber ones. They work just as good as the RecTec pellets in my grill. One thing I did notice is when I turn the dial all the way up the grill gets hotter with the Weber pellets. Not sure how that’s possible but it’s a noticeable difference, my steaks take less time to cook than they did with the RecTec pellets.

Same here. Pit Boss and Louisiana pellet grills are the same company. My family seems to like them.

Oh I could not agree more. The convenience and efficiency of a pellet grill is why it is my favorite. If one was to rate a kamado as a 10/10 for smokiness, a pellet still falls short but it is a bout a 7/10.

I watched a blind taste test experiment on the 4 major types of smokers (offset, reverse flow, kamado, and pellet. The results were overwhelmingly in favor of offset and reverse flow, with kamado and pellet coming in behind them and basically getting the same results.

Man I'm just using this thread to bitch a litte. I have had a brisket in the fridge going on three weeks now. I haven't been able to do a smoke since I don't have any cover for my GMG and it has rained almost every single day in New Orleans. Looks like there is little chance of rain this weekend so I'll finally be able to smoke this bad boy.
