It is just plain out of control. For anyone who complains about crawfish prices, you need to glance over at the shrimp and thank God we have the mud bugs.

I regularly see them for $5.99/lb around BR for 21-25ct.

I get jumbos for $8/lb and those things are massive.

What are you seeing?

Not too many shrimp boats in BR.

Was down by fouchon last year and they don't get much cheaper than 5/lb, even off the boat. I think they've taken advice from the drug dealing crawfish people.

The number of people shrimping has gone down since the spill.
That didn't help prices.

Shrimp is still a better deal for the money. You only get 12-15% yield (peeled meat % on whole weight) on crawfish while you get 60% on shrimp.

Most people don't factor this in when buying crawfish/shrimp.

$3/lb live whole crawfish = $20/lb meat
$5/lb live whole shrimp = $8.50/lb meat

That's a simplistic analysis. Cooking shrinkage factor comes into play and shrimp has a little worse shrinkage than crawfish but overall they are still cheaper.

It has more to do with a lower number of imports coming into the states in last few years than shrimper numbers. Although shrimper numbers are dwindling every few years as the older generations hang it up and younger generation goes into something more profitable.
