Defiantly not a micro brew. Not a macro brew but it is way bigger than micro brew

is it a religious reason as to why the SEC lags in microbrews?

I would say this might play a small role but most likely it has to do with the ethnic groups that settled the area. If you looke were the big beer areas are the are dominate German,Irish, ect ect .. folks. I got a History of Beer in America book from the ol lady for xmas. Very good book, I think LA was the only southern state had an established brewery(Dixie) that was mentioned. I know there were probably smaller ones but who knows.

Louisiana will also have Bayou Teche Brewing out of Arnaudville, LA starting this fall, although they plan on being rather small and very local from everything they've put out.

I would say more than a small role. Hell, some of these states can't even get beer in with a alc content over 5% or so.
Probably because the states had so many people against drinking that it discourage microbrewers from opening up.

I think in Louisiana you have to brew under 12,500 barrels per year for sale to be considered a mirobrewery.

Both the Brown and the Blonde are outstanding. Their Hopitoulas IPA that is coming out in just a few months was also very good when they unveiled it at the WYES tasting a while back.

This is the kind of info I was hoping this thread would unveil.

Are there any must try microbrews in Miss or Ala?

I think the local agricultural products plays a big part as well. In the Northwest, especially in Montana, every little town has its own microbrewery. Of course, there is a ton of Barley and Wheat grown here, and about half the hops farms in the US are in WA,OR,ID,MT

I'm pretty sure that Terrapin is now brewed in Canada. I was a big fan of their Rye Pale Ale.

Not according to this link. It says they opened a brewery in Athens in 2007.

I was on the AL gulf coast this weekend and bought a 6-pack of Terrapin Golden Ale. I just popped one and the bottle says "Brewed to the exact specifications of Terrapin Beer Company's Brewmaster by Frederick Brewing Co., Frederick MD". The Golden Ale is brewed under contract in MD. Not sure about the other beers. Last bottle of Rye Pale Ale I had said something similar.

the Heiner Brau strawberry stuff is pretty decent; not as good as abita's but at least you can get it year round
