it blows my mind how mcdonalds has found themselves in this mess.
You act like the company is in dire straits, they're still far and away the #1 fast food place in the country sales wise. I'm not defending their food, but they're certainly not a mess.

Sales aren't what they were, but that's more of an increased competition issue than anything

their stock value has been going down, they've fired their CEO...they're at a point where they need to decide where to go. I've said in terms of bidnass, they are still a top dog, but they're losing market share and have been for some time.

Global sales loss of 3.3% last quarter and a posted stock loss. It's also trending lower this quarter. McDonald's is in serious trouble if they don't get it fixed.

there's a lot of competition for soft drinks, and yet coca cola is coca cola. brand power

I remember reading several reports last quarter about McDonald's and thinking the same thing. You want to know why 5 Guys is ridiculously successful? You don't walk in needing a decipher instrument to navigate the menu. They have limited menu items on purpose. Same thing as Cane's. McDonald's could learn a thing or two from these businesses.

I can just picture Fox Mulder tossing and turning in his sleep all night muttering "mmbbrhg.....mcdonalds....fjfjek....blacks...mmmmph...powerhouse....grrrghh..." And waking up in a cold sweat.

Don't mourn a temporary struggle of a shitty fast food restaurant

Their steak biscuit with sauteed onions is delightful. I take a satin along with it and wash it down with an urng HC.

it's their #1 problem. Even their drink selection is mind numbingly long. It doesn't help that people don't want to walk into a McDonalds in the first place . I went there a month ago and the chicken nugget meal was #11...

ELEVEN! Burgers, Fries, Shakes...they have 10 meals before something so basic? Their recent marketing campaign "ask mcdonalds anything" was really short sighted.

1. it made them seem like they have previously been a company that hides things

2. it lends credence to the food Nazis claims (it's not real chicken, blah, blah, blah)

3. it showed skeptical would be customers instead of smiling customers

It was a hand on the forehead commercial..."what the frick are they doing?"

Speaking of long drink selections. These fricking things should not be allowed in a city full of old retirees

we have these discussion all the time at work, sometimes we trail off of something much more important . It's just what we love, and it's good to think about business strategy as it pertains to other businesses and industries. Sharpens your critical thinking processes IMO. McDonalds came up first when they canned their CEO, and then again when someone here said they bought some stock.

Nicely done in this thread Fox. It's been in financial news publications for months that this is exactly McDonald's problem. Not sure how people aren't getting it.

McDonalds has had a bloated menu and shitty marketing for years, definitely things that need to be addressed.

But I'd say much of their loss of market share stems from places like Wendy's, Chick Fila, Taco Bell, etc. that have drastically stepped their games up the past 10 years and grown a good bit. That's not even mentioning the smaller, higher quality places (Cane's, 5 Guys) that are continuing to grow and nipping at their sales.

Should be interesting to see what they do, BK has just said frick it and positioned themselves as the place to get incredibly cheap crap.

Yes them trying to reach out to millennials, yuppie foodies and hipsters was a bad strategy. Nobody who wants a grilled chicken spinach wrap wants to pay $8 bucks for one at McDonald's where the french fries alone are comprised of like 17 different ingredients in addition to potatoes. They need to get back to being a cheap place for working poor and lower middle class to bring their family, or Joe Six Pack to drop in after a shift, and get some basic food for cheap.

That was to be expected and I can guarantee you the people at McDonald's took that into account in their business plan. The issue is their profits / shares have dropped more than they imagined and they can't right the ship.

I would argue that McDonald's created a huge opportunity for these chains, and really made it possible for these other new niche chains to flourish. I could be very wrong, but I don't think I am.
