Seeing as craft brewing is in a bit of a downturn right now, how do you rate each brewery in Louisiana. Breweries will be assigned up to a total of 58 points based on the following parameters. This is a subjective ranking, so vote based on your opinions of that brewery and their beer. We’ll keep this thread open for scoring for a few weeks and then I’ll make efforts to compile the scores in a spreadsheet and post them later. (If there is a brewery missing that you think needs to be added or deleted, let me know.)

Breweries will be assigned a score based on:

Quality - 18 pts - this will be your measure of the overall quality of the beer. Flavor, Aroma, how well they nail the style they are brewing, etc... Do they make great beer or meh beer?
Brewery Atmosphere - 15 points - Assign up to 12 points based on the atmosphere of the brewery. Do they serve food? Amenities (trivia night, kid friendly, dog friendly, etc...) Does the brewery have an atmosphere that matters to you? Is it a dive and is that a good thing to you? Is the brewery stale/boring/uninviting?
Price - 8 points - Are you willing to pay the price for the beer? Is it appropriate or is it overpriced?
Style Variety – 6 points – Does the brewery brew multiple styles? Do they have varying styles available or are they more of a 1 trick pony. This isn’t the quality of the style, but rather the variety of styles they bring to the table.
Social Media - 6 points – Do they have a large social media presence? Do they advertise and post weekly about new beer releases, events, specials? And then the down side of social media, are they fairly neutral or are you berated by their politics? Or, if you like their politics, is that a plus?
Distribution/Packaging - 5 points - What is their distribution reach? Are you able to acquire these beers or is it mostly brewery only. Does the brewery keep 4 packs available, or is it crowler/growler only? Or, is it tap only, no packaging at all?

Quality (18 pts) –
Brewery Atmosphere (15 pts) –
Price (8 pts) –
Style Variety (6 pts) –
Social Media (6 pts) –
Distribution (5 pts) -
TOTAL (58 pts) -

I just wanna know how many are even bothering with distribution anymore. I've heard some nasty crap about the demands from distributors to get fair treatment. Can't imagine why.

For my scoring, i'm trying to keep it rather even. I don't mind making a trip to a brewery to pick up beer if it's really good.

I'm going to adjust the distribution score to include packaging as well. Do they serve cans out the taproom or is it crowler only, or neither? Kingbob, you may want to adjust.

Have they done some different things the past 8 years or so?

That’s the last time I’ve been, but back then, I’d have given about 2 points on atmosphere.

Obviously top-tier quality, but I basically used to drink one pint then just buy beer to take home and drink.

The distribution for Parish could be better, especially for people north of the lake. It seems like Covington and Mandeville get anything they have to offer, 30 miles north, not so much.

Why not do a scale of 1-10?

I figured beer quality and atmosphere should be weighed more heavily than other categories.

If you mean overall, because 1-10 is kind of boring and doesn’t tell me much about breweries I haven’t been to.

Cenla = only 2 = too many Baptist

Huckleberry brews up some good stuff, as well as Twenty 8 West which isn't on the list.

Abita Brew Pub or Abita Brewery?

The brewery taproom has about 20 beers not sold in stores and unique.

Abita Brew Pub mainly has the beers sold in stores.

Variety isn’t about how many different styles of beers they offer but how many beers they offer that are actually worth trying. Abita makes one really solid wheat beer and flavors it. The brew pup experiments with different variations, but rarely does abita put out anything that isn’t a fruit flavored wheat beer that’s worth a crap. I did really like their vanilla triple dog they released last year, though.

Gilla gets knocked for this too. While they make the best milkshake ipas and sours in the state, they pretty much ONLY make those styles and aren’t really great at anything else. Rally Cap pretty much only makes IPA’s too.

The brew pub and the brewery are 2 different things.

The Abita Brew Pub is a restaurant that has the beers sold in stores made by Abita on tap.

The Abita Brewery Taproom has 20 or 25 beers and 10 at least that aren’t sold in stores and may never be sold in stores. Neapolitan Stout for instance. Not just fruit flavored wheat beers.

I enjoy both places but the Brewery Taproom has, IMO, a really good variety of beers, most which are way better than the beers Abita bottles and sells. The taproom had a chocolate hefe couple years ago that was incredible but never had it since and was never bottled.

I thought the ranking was ranking the actual breweries, not just the variety they sell in stores.
