Live Crawfish Storage Question

I bought 60lbs live and they had to split a sack. The guy put the split sack in a paper bag which obviously won't hold. So can I dump the crawfish into an ice chest and ice them without killing them? They need to be ice for around 5 more hours until we boil.

Dump in ice chest. Put ice chest in shaded area. Come back from time to time a wet them with hose pipe.

I know not to drown them.

I say no, just keep them out the sun and water em from time to time. Others may disagree.

I cut the sack open in an ice chest. Laid a damp towel over them and put some ice on top of the towel

Cool is fine, it isn't 100 degrees out today, they will be ok in the shade in an ice chest. DO NOT close the lid and suffocate them...

That's what I'm afraid of. I have 40lbs in a medium ice chest, and 20lbs in a smaller one and they look cramped. They already look lethargic but it might just be from being covered with a towel and ice. I just don't know if direct ice contact is better than leaving them out.

They will be very lethargic with ice. They usually go to sleep with ice. Perfectly fine though

Thanks Jones. I've boiled a million times, but never let them sit this long. I put ice directly on top of them then watered them with the drain open. That gives them the initial cooling then I covered them with direct ice and left the drain open. Hopefully that works.

I bought 2 sacks Wed..... cleaned them this morning and I had 8 dead ones in 1 sack and about 12 in another. They were in a refrigerator with a wet towel on top and bottom.

Dump into ice chest. Put ice chest in shade. Don't close ice chest. Drape sack on top of ice chest (i.e. on top of the crawfish. Open the drain.
Every 30 min or so, take your hose and if you have a nozzle, set it on a fine spray and go spray the ice chest over the sack covering the opening.
5 hours is not that long. A lot of times I will pick up at 8 or so and won't drop the first boil until 1.

We drove a few hundred pounds to Missouri once and just left a damp rag on top. When ever we filled up with gas I would spray them with gallon sprayer I brought. Ended up with no more dead ones than usual.
