Was breaking stem tips off and had a worm hanging half way out after breaking one off. Probably about half an inch long. Pretty gross. Anybody find a worm in asparagus before? I tried Googling but couldn't find much info.

Better than finding half a worm while eating it.

ChewyDante, I'm no entomologist, but my google search leads me to the conclusion that the worm-like creatures you noticed are actually the larvae to the pesky asparagus beetle.

There are two species, common asparagus beetle (Crioceris asparagi) and spotted (Crioceris duodecimpunctata). Common adults have reddish bodies with black stripes and cream-yellow patches on their wing covers.

Even though I suspect it, nothing was mentioned about the beetles having odd smelling urine.

Just indicate how fresh it is. Nut up and eat.

I was just at the store deciding whether to put broccoli or asparagus in my pasta. I chose broccoli at the last second, and am glad my meal hasn't been ruined.
