I finally tried Russian River Brewing Company's Pliny the Elder last night

I was worried it might not live up to my expectations, but it was superb. As good as any beer I've ever tried. Don't know how a DIPA could be any better.
FWIW, I had it on tap at The Bottle Room in Whittier, California.

Absolutely. The only reason it gets knocked at all is because of the inevitable backlash against the hype. Beachwood Bbq in Long Beach and Seal Beach has it on tap regularly.

I had the same experience when I tried it. I thought no way it will live up to the hype but it was definitely one of the best beers I've ever had.

Yep it's up there. The Younger is the big brother of this beer-worth seeking out but keg/draft only.

Pliny was a pioneer in the style. A very good balanced DIPA that drinks easily. It gets beat up on a bit now mostly because it's not the only player in the game any more.
Great beer and a solid West Coast DIPA. For a change of pace try to get a Northeast/VT style DIPA like Heady Topper or Lawson's brew. Pliny strikes a good balance or malt and hops. Things get fun when the balance is intentionally shifted towards hops.

A more readily available NE DIPA in te style of Heady Topper is Boulevard's The Calling. It's really nice.

I thought The Calling was pretty malty and not close to Heady in flavor profile, tasted almost like a Belgian IPA.

Just got back from Napa and went to the brewery while I was there. Tried all their stuff, it's great stuff. PtE is some smooth stuff

Here is a pic of my haul. It was a pain in the arse to package up and bring home but they all made it back and it will be worth it.
