When grandma made a seafood gumbo, it always had okra in it. Sometimes also with chicken and sausage gumbo too. To say okra doesn't go in gumbo proves Ron White is correct...it just CAN'T be fixed!

Learn from my mom always smothered the okra first before adding to gumbo,and no tomatoes.

Gumbo is on the stove now. Only used half a 16oz. bag of okra. We'll see how it goes.

I will say it is a little thicker. The okra doesn't really add much besides that. It is basically mush and tastes like...well....okra


Eta: the okra seeds aren't very appealing either

I've had very good seafood gumbo with just a little chopped tomato in it...very good flavor and a nice color presentation. I don't put tomato in mine though...but okra...it's not gumbo without okra.
