I decided last year I was never making it again. It's a bland, boring bird that is difficult to cook properly. I think I'm going to do a leg of lamb this year instead, or maybe a goose.

Did prime here last year. But this year will do an injected and smoked or baked bird.

is goose easier?

nobody wants to do it, but i think you can cook the legs separate from the breasts and come out well with the turkey.

Thats where the prep and cooking come into play...to make that bland, boring bird into a feast...Just can't go aginst tradition.

Sure you can. Seriously, after last Thanksgiving, I actually started to question it and realized I really didn't care for turkey, I mean, it's not bad, but it wouldn't be in my top fifty things to eat. I asked my wife about it, and my sister (we generally get together with her family and we all cook) and she felt the same, so that was that. I hear you on the tradition, but there were lots of things eaten at that first Thanksgiving, including ducks and geese, which frankly I'd prefer to eat, so I think we'll go in that direction.

I do turkey for Thanksgiving but not Christmas. My main motivation for doing the bird is to have the components for a killer jamb or gumbo.

I'm all about some fried turkey if really juicy, but can't stand baked or smoked unless for a thin sliced sandwich.

I mean, i'd really rather have a brisket, fried catfish, gumbo, or some other kickass food.

I normally get a fried turkey from Hi Nabor and a small Honeybaked Ham...We go somewhat traditional for Thanksgiving, but for Christmas Eve it's gumbo & potato salad with maybe another small ham, and ribeyes or filets on the grill Christmas day.

this is what my family does; turkey on Thanksgiving and either a goose or duck for Christmas day.

I actually really like turkey, though. finding creative ways to use all that turkey for a week after Thanksgiving is part of the fun...

If you're going to be blasting folks on the internet, and calling them "amateur", than maybe YOU should learn to respond to the correct poster.
