Gumbo with tomatoes

i'm from Cajun country and never had gumbo with tomatoes in it. I have to admit, it wasn't that bad. I ate two bowls.
although I did miss my sweet potato that i'm used to putting in mine.

instead of potato salad, I usually bake sweet potatoes and drop one in my bowl after I serve. it doesn't melt in the gumbo like potatoes. to each his own.

you never ate your gumbo with a sweet potato?
you're missing out on a delicious treat. most just put one on the side but some put it in the bowl. after it's peeled of course.

It seems from past discussions that a fair number of folks, especially around Opelousas, put sweet potato in gumbo.
I'm a potato salad man myself, but I'm willing to try it.

I'm not putting tomatoes in mine, but if a bowl of tomato gumbo is standing in the way of me and hunger I'm wiping it out. Call it Chicken and Sausage creole or Tumbo or some such if the bastardization of the dish is what's bothering you. Doesn't mean it's a disgusting thing to eat. IMO

until I was about mid 20's, I always did potato salad. however, one night I went to a friend's house and he had a tray of baked sweet potatoes on the stove on the side of the gumbo pot. so, cut one in half and peeled it. I placed it in my bowl and I've never did potato salad again. it was awesome.
note- I also like a few cracked eggs in my gumbo.
