Going get a few groceries around BR tomorrow, and I'm wondering where the best place is to get good meat and produce. I'm thinking either Whole Foods or Calandro's. Any other suggestions?

Southside Produce market on Perkins blows grocery stores out of the water.

Calandros for regular meats in Prime grade.

Fresh Market for more out of the box meats. Great selection.

Sssshhhh!!! Don't tell everybody. Traffic is bad enough out there!

I like the frozen green beans in the freezer section.

Also, if you're going to be in Baton Rouge for groceries between 8 AM and 12 PM, check out the Red Stick Farmer's Market on 5th and Main, downtown. It's alot of fun and you'll get to see some nice local produce, meats and dairy.. It's pretty impressive.

Southside Produce is by far the best produce spot in town with price, quality and selection.

Cheap meats I go to AG stores like Matherne's or Hi-Nabor.

Expensive meats I go to Whole Foods or Calandro's.

I've gotten bad meat at the one on Corporate on more than one occasion. If you go, ask to smell the meat before they wrap it.

My favorite grocery store for meat is Calvin's Bocage Market. They invariably have a weekly deal on beef that they advertise in the Food section of the Advocate on Thursday. This week it is NY Strips.

Southside and Fresh Pickens (on Coursey across from Home Depot) are the best places to get produce.

Southside sounds like a must. I'm mostly going to be buying chicken breasts, so I doubt I'll be picking up any prime grade meats.

Find a place that doesn't sell those monster mutant chicken breasts and it should be okay. Years ago chickens were graded broilers, fryers, baking chickens, and stewing hens according to their age and weight at slaughter.

Nowadays, anything from megacorporations like Tyson or Sanderson Farms is genetically engineered to weigh 5-6 pounds at 7 weeks, what used to be the weight of a stewing hen. It's freak meat from birds that are plagued with all kinds of diseases not found in nature. Whole Foods is probably your best source for wholesome chicken.
