First off, let me say that I agree with your sentiment, for the most part. I'm by no means a wine snob or elitist, but I couldn't disagree with the statement above more.

If you have even a remedial palate and nose-- like mine-- I can pour a glass of wine for you (let's say zinfandel in this example), have you smell and taste it, then aerate it vigorously and it will smell and taste different afterwards. I imagine the latter has a lot to do with wafting out the alcohol that collects in the glass, but that's just a hunch. In the case of zinfandel, aeration often brings out fruity, jammy aromas and flavors. It's not a sutble difference, or something I've invented in my mind, either. I'd challenge you to try it.

I think you severely underestimate the power of suggestion You think the cheap stuff doesn't taste as good because your mind is telling you before you even take a sip that it must not taste as good. Same with the more expensive wines. And I think it's pretty ironic that in such a thread people are kicking toddlers out of the way to rush to the front of the line and say that they personally have a more refined palate and anyone who is skeptical is just not as refined.

God you are such a pompous little bastard.

I've had plenty of cheap wines that I have enjoyed. I was counteracting the point being made in this thread that anybody who claims to be able to tell the distinction between cheap and expensive wines are full of shite and are only out to satiate their cognitive dissonance about spending a lot of money on wine.

Oh, so when you said this:

quote:

I'm talking $7 vs $50.

You are talking $12 vs $18.

Apples and oranges.

What you really meant was this:

quote:
Tell the difference between 12 and 18? You most certainly cannot.

Yes, I can.

Right?

JT, have you watched Around the World in 80 Trades on PBS? The host is currently trying to sell South African wines in China, which is apparently in love with French wines.

Some of the comments of the Chinese wine tasters were pretty funny...such as they did not like the taste of the wine because South Africa did not have the culture to make wines. Just thought it was funny in light of this thread.

Probably depends on the chili powder

If you're using some standard run of the mill chili powder it's going to be obvious because there isn't that much heat

Now if you're using something that packs a lot of heat, then yeah, I could see it being difficult to distinguish based on flavor profile alone

I'm not sure what you can taste in wine, beer or otherwise--I don't know you.

What is clear, however, is that you come off as a complete dickhole.

I thought we were having a gentleman's disagreement. JT has been a good sport as I thought we all were.

I missed the "gentleman's" part.

He can prove his point without lecturing to everyone that "they can't" on such a subjective topic.

We know how you feel, JT. Some disagree. Your viewpoint isn't gospel. Some people *GASP* can indeed tell the difference in the wines you've mentioned.

Yeah he can be condescending...but the whole point is that everyone thinks they can do it

So naturally people are going to defend their ability to do so

But when you have people who have A LOT more exposure to wine than any of us here and they can't do it, it should make you question your ability to truly discern

The viewpoint that is most commonly talked down to is the one that we are all pretty regular and not possessed of crazy tasting skills.

In any event, trust me, blind tastings are fun-filled, humorous events. Sorry if it came off wrong, but I find the topic endlessly fascinating. And in general, I am interested in self-deception.

I think the problem is when you tell someone they can't do something that they claim they can do so bluntly they take that as you calling them a liar.

No one likes being called a liar understandably.

There might be a smoother way to try to convince them that you're right
