Absolutely correct and unfortunately I get stuck in circumstances where this is the case, but the truth of the matter is he came on this board asking if it was worth it to drive out of his way to this place.
LL said it best. There are better burgers all around town without the wait, can be faster, and cheaper, when you pick the phone up and place the order.
FiveGuys was like going to Acme Oyster House when it opened. People were flocking in droves to eat there, waiting in line, paying too much for oysters, and only to realize they could've gone to several other restaurants cheaper, closer, and faster.

That is one of the oddities of the food board, good enough isn't good enough here.
If it makes you feel any better when I make something at home and it's just "good enough" I'm disappointed

I've never paid $12 for a meal at 5 guys. All you fat fricks would probably be well served by skipping a meal there every once in a while.

I don't understand how common misinformation is on this board.
I just checked my bank register. I got a double-patty burger, my wife got a veggie sandwich, we both got regular soft drinks and split the order of fries (it's a lot of fries).
Our bill, after taxes = $14.55.
It's one of the cheapest lunches in our rotation.

Doesn't appear too misinformed.
That there is about the same price you would pay at the best burger spots in town.

Just trying to talk the ole lady to see it this way also.

That would mean that my wife's veggie sandwich was only $1.91?
I'm not sure why they dont offer a smaller fry. Two people shouldn't each get their own order of fries. Unless, they enjoy obesity.

Thanks for the break down. Using your numbers:
2xHamburger$9.78
2xRegular Drink$3.98
1xCajun Fries$2.79
SUB TOTAL $16.55
TAX $1.48
TOTAL $9.01*2=$18.03
$12 is 33% more than $9 so people have been throwing around a pretty inflated figure when saying Five Guys isn't worth it. Not to mention you don't have to tip at Five Guys vs. the sit down restaurants everyone is saying is a better value. I'm not saying Five Guys is better, just that we've apparently been using some fuzzy math to say they are significantly worse.

The wife, 2 kids, and I all share 1 order of fries. Don't forget you also get free appetizers. Try that at Sonic or Wendy's.

I did inflate my numbers. Cheeseburger, fries, large drink is $11, not $12. My deepest apologies. That's still about 40% more than other fast food and its not 40% better. Not to mention the lines and no drive thru. Its just not worth it to me.

I'm not a super fan of Five Guys. I just think it is okay, but the prices listed on this board seem inflated. I seem to recall the drinks being cheaper than 1.99 - but maybe somebody can find a local menu and verify. $14.55 total for my wife and I to eat is good, imo. You always pay more to get a marginal increase in quality and there's definitely a quality boost over Wendys and other fast food joints. The burgers are solid to me. Nothing to write home about, but it's fast, consistent and always juicy. I usually eat the nuts and you don't have to leave a tip.
I think part of the problem is when you go alone it essentially costs more because most people split fries 2 or 3 ways. Some people I believe may be buying the large drink, as well.
I just have a hard time believing the veggie sandwich is less than $2, which is what it would have to be for the numbers thrown around on this board to be true.
eta: I also don't get the cheese "upgrade".

I typically eat under 10 bucks at Five Guys in Hoover fwiw. Its not bad if I am in the mood for a hamburger. and if I need it fast, I go there.

I'm positive we spent a few dollars more than this, but even if we hadn't, for me PERSONALLY .. I eat fast food when I am broke. Period. I don't go to a fast food place in the place of going out to dinner. frick that.
Five Guys doesn't even have a drive-thru.. So if I wanted to grab-n-go, I'd order out from somewhere else.
i'm not hating.. if people like the place, by all means go. I just think that the price isn't worth it. And if someone is asking should they drive an excessive amount out of the way for it, I'm going to say absolutely not all the way.
Mason's traditional burger:
quote:
Traditional Burger 7.25
|burgers are dressed with mayo and mustard, lettuce, tomato and onions; and served with your choice of french fries, onion rings, potato salad or coleslaw|
Their other burgers vary by a few cents to a dollar tops.
And there, you're getting service and MUCH MUCH MUCH better quality.
I could go on picking out burgers around town with a good value like this.
Like I said, for me personally, fast food is reserved for my broke arse not wanting to spend more than the few 1's in my wallet. Not for being out $20 for 2 people.

I ate at Five Guys today for lunch. Around 7.50 for a small cheeseburger and small fry. I always drink water.

Small cheeseburger, small fries, and water at Wendy's costs under $4. That's the point some people in here are trying to make. It's questionable to me if it's better at all. Its definitely not 40% better.

That's a bit steep. You need an eating buddy and also you need to stop putting cheese on everything, fatty.

I understand, was just saying. I try not to go to fast food joints much at all.

I don't eat the whole fry, way too much. I don't put cheese on everything but thanks dick.

For a place that labels/markets itself as fast food, that's VERY high. I don't even pay $7.50 for an all-inclusive meal at most fast food joints. And I always get a $2-$3 soft drink.
If you're paying $7.50 for a small burger and fries .. and a WATER, that's not a fast food price. As I posted, the Mason's burger is $7.25 and much better/bigger than 5Guys. And you're getting food brought to you, refilled drinks, someone cleaning up after you, etc.
For the extra $1-$2 on a tip it might cost at a restaurant, I don't see where 5 Guys is "worth it".
I really enjoyed the food when I went (I like fast food) and would love to see lower prices and have a reason to go again. It's not a bad place.

I just felt like stopping. I don't eat out much. It's much healthier and cheaper to eat at home. I like to go out for a drink here and there though.
The price isn't worth it, I agree. A burger just sounded good as I was passing by on my home
