Parish with Imperial Stout and Ghost, Abita is not even close.

The saison from GR is amazing, the DIPA is good.

Abita doesn't have to do much to catch up with GR, IMO

we need to do another top 18 list...this was before GR coffee porter, IPL and Parish stout came into play...IMO all 3 belong in the top 10 although some would agree the GR coffee porter does not belong
We should just do a top 10 Abita, Parish, NOLA, GR thread

quote:

01. Parish - Ghost in the Machine
02. Parish - Grand Reserve
03. Great Raft - All My Tomorrows
04. Great Raft - Grace and Grit
05. Old Rail - Cow Catcher
06. Nola - Girl Stout Cookie
07. Bayou Teche - Coteau Rodaire
08. Abita - Macchiato
09. Abita - Bourbon Street Stout
10. Abita - Oyster Stout
11. Chafunkta - Old 504
12. Parish - Dr. Hoptagon
13. Parish - Envie
14. Tin Roof - Parade Ground Porter
15. Parish - Farmhouse IPA
16. Nola - Irish Channel Stout
17. Bayou Teche - Miel Sauvage
18. Bayou Teche - Cocodrie

GR would automatically have 4 beers in my top 10: grit and grace, all my saisons, coffee porter, and their IPL...and I would put Commotion in the top 18

Parish would get Ghost and their Stout hands down. I'm not a huge fan of Barleywine's but certainly Grand Reserve deserves to be in there. Also, Envie, Farmhouse IPA and Dr. Hoptagon get mentions

Abita I would have the barrel aged stout, Macchiato, oyster stout, and I would add Wrought Iron IPA to the mix as a top 18 beer

so to conclude, 5 beers from Parish, 4 beers from Great Raft, and 4 beers from Abita

seems to me it's a great discussion, and lost in all this is NOLA's inability to bottle/can or have more than a limited release of their taproom beers because they would have many more on the list as well

Maybe overstating things a bit. In that order you have good, exceptional, good, bad, and TBD.

I like GOAT Raft, but I'd take batch 2 of GiTM and this new Imperial Reserve all day every day over that line-up.

If that's a porter...

Well. Whatever. It's a shite porter if it's a porter. Pretty sure it's a brown ale.

now Awkward Uncle. That's a phenomenal list of bottle releases in their first year. All have been excellent. And that's not even touching on the 3 very solid flagships, or Make Believer (which might be their best beer to date). Their product is extremely consistent and consistently above average to great.

Haven't tasted the Awkward Uncle nor have I tasted the NOLA Prytania Porter but I've heard great things about both.

and I agree about the Make Believer...I've posted her numerous times but it's the best session IPA I've had...just a notch above founders all day but considerably better than Sculpin's, Stones, Firestone Walker, etc.

just in the last year the list of amazing beers out of Louisiana is better than probably the previous 5 years combined.

I, personally, consider one of these 3 solid, one acceptable and the last just not good.

but I find their normal stuff to be inferior to GR's.

I would say the opposite. Ranking them,

Envie
Commotion
South Coast

Canebrake
Southern Drawl

Reasonably Corrupt

Overall I believe parish is clearly the best brewery in the state with GR in a comfortable second position.

This is coming from a non homer because I no longer even reside in the state of louisiana.

Huh? Maybe if you don't like coffee then you don't like the beer, but how in the world can you call that a bad beer?? It's a very good beer.

And you're right - it is a brown ale.

Coffee brown, certainly not a porter. Commotion is just a no. It is there with NOLA blonde and Tin Roof Blonde.

see how you mentioned "batch 2." that's a knock on Parish is consistency. GR puts out the same solid formula every time. They don't have to tweak it and if they do it's not even a huge noticeable difference like the GitM and Farmhouse and they don't frick up batches like they have with Envie. To me, that means something.

I think at the moment, due to Parish having a 2-year head start on GR, I'm giving GR the nod.

This is like comparing Anthony Davis right now to LeBron James in his prime. yeah even though Davis is currently putting up the BEST numbers in the NBA, most would still consider LeBron the GOAT...but let's wait 2-3 more years and I think GR will hands down be the best brewery in the state.

Should be seeing bottles in March. Along with another Stone collab. They had to hire more brewers to keep up with the demand. They actually sell their beer in other states.

But Parish > GR

I wouldn't say it is bad, but I do not have any desire to have it again. The nose is good, but the taste is boring as hell. I love coffee, but I an actual beer in there too.

You want a coffee brown ale, go drink Surly Coffee Bender. I call that a 5 star beer on untappd because it is for me. But sure, I don't like coffee.

That nose isn't there, the flavor isn't there, it just isn't good. When I crack one I want to know it's coffee all in my face. That's why I love Mystery Romp as well. Creature of Habit isn't that.

Maybe I'm not objective because I want it to be more than what it is, but according to what I want it to be, it's bad.

They should start. Committing to a beer formula when it isn't good is a terrible move, see Mecha.

Not when you consider they have been selling beer for 13 months.

How many DIPAs, hoppy saisons, IPLs, and coffee browns did Parish/NOLA/Tin Roof release in bomber format in their first year?

G&G, AMT & AAL are all, at worst, top 7 beers produced in the state. Each rates at 90 or above on Beer Advocate (to use a standard most of us can agree on).

Their first year success in producing really great beer is exciting, because it means in a few years, they should really be making some great stuff. I can easily see them becoming the next Cigar City or Westbrook (to use a couple of other very young brewery examples).

I don't get the dislike for Reasonably Corrupt... I think it is their 2nd best flagship right behind commotion.

I would say:

Commotion
Reasonably Corrupt
Envie
South Coast

Southern Drawl

You say that but Mecha is a great seller in other markets. That's why it's still freaking here. One out of state distributor can't get enough of it.

They haven't stopped tweaking Commotion yet. They're always looking for ways to improve their beer. That doesn't change the fact that the quality of the beer is always on point.

Not true. "Batch 2" was better because they got access to different hops.

And ham, ill take reasonably corrupt over southern drawl. Sd is way to sweet for me.

Creature of habit wasnt bad imo, but it wasnt really that good either.

Fair enough. If I want coffee, I'll drink community. I like the fact that it is a light-drinking coffee ale. I have had Coffee Bender before and I only wanted a few ounces of it. I can drink 4-5 pints of Creature of Habit though and not be overwhelmed. Different strokes for different folks. Still that doesn't make it a bad beer just because it isn't what you want or expect.

Minus one batch of Envie, that barely got traction on this board, Parish hasn't sacrificed quality with their tweaking.
