Thought we should have an official wine thread to share great finds and talk about what wine we are enjoying at the moment.

I have been getting into wine the last couple of years after thinking I hated it all my life. My favorite wine is Pinot Noir but I recently discovered a Tempranillo that I loved, is that the name of the grape or is is Rioja? Did I mention I don't know much about wine but really want to learn? lol

I recently signed up for the garagiste.com mailing list and today they emailed about a Syrah from Washington State. They are selling for just under $20 a bottle and it apparently normally goes for closer to $40. Not sure how much they bend the truth in these emails but I am thinking of purchasing a few bottles as I heard Syrah is a great Red to drink with spicy Indian food.

I will probably come in here to see if anyone can recommend any of the wines from garagiste but I will also let you know when I find something I like. Please do the same.

Speaking of the mailing list, I have copied it below. Can anyone guess which wine they are talking about? They dropped clear hints and it probably wont show since I am copying and pasting but they bolded every W in the email so I am assuming the wine starts with a W.

I like the idea of buying these wines a few bottles at a time and then when they get ready to ship and I have 12 bottles they come to me. Kind of like a wine savings account. lol

Email:
Mystery Wine #109

Dear Friends,

With an offer like Mystery Wine #109 (the current release, from a great vintage), I'm starting to wonder why anyone would pay full retail for anything again?

Why?

Today's winery is one of the more adored in Washington State with a feel-good karma that locals in the Pacific Northwest have grown to love and support for many years (let's say, 20+ years at a minimum). They have a devoted mailing list, long history of exemplary/artisan quality and rarely (never) place their red wine on sale. They are one of the more respected entities in Washington State and they also have a fan base that is among the most loyal in the Northwest.

Sound good so far?

What I can tell you:

- This is the exact same cork, bottle, wine, label etc that sits on store shelves as I type this.

- Mystery #109 is a new release Syrah from the enticing 2012 vintage in Washington State (it is NOT a cast-off wine).

- The wine has already received accolades by the WA, WS and WE with 90pt or more ratings from all - to back that up the community average is also more than 90pts (with a number of notes).

- The lowest discount retail $ on the 2012 around the US is in the $34-37 range and up to $50+ (winery mailing list is in the $34-40 range). The $34 marker is the "lowest allowed" by the winery. The wholesale/distributor tariff to retailers and restaurants around the US is in the $24-28 range.

- This wine is about pleasure, poise and a long/savory finish of deep fruit and tinges of soil. It has volume, depth and a broad palate presence (thanks to the 2012 vintage) with something for everyone. My guess is that your dinner guests will ask for seconds and thirds (I mean second and third bottles). This wine is also an excellent choice as a gift, especially at the cut-rate tariff below (with the finest original provenance available of course!)

- As noted above - this is a winery to feel good about (that is not always the case and it does make a difference to me). Your support matters to them and they are extremely connected to their customer base. If anything, Mystery Wine #109 is a "Thank You" of sorts as so many of you cross over from our Email List to their list. By offering this as a Mystery Wine, they can avoid ruffling feathers in the trade but also give you something in return for your support. A win-win.

- "Keep your face always toward the sunshine - and shadows will fall behind you." - Walt Whitman

- "A word is dead when it is said, some say. I say it just begins to live that day." - Emily Dickinson

- "Ye stars! which are the poetry of heaven!" - Lord Byron

- "As I grow older, I pay less attention to what men say. I just watch what they do." - Andrew Carnegie

- What if Charlotte never spun her web?

To answer one of your questions, tempranillo is the name of the grape, Rioja is the name of the region in Spain in which it is grown. These are some of my favorites too..

Feel free to start another thread for people who don't read more than 2 paragraphs at a time. If the thread is whacked it is because little bitches complained about the OP instead of conversing about wine.
