Opened the damn back, and there it fell, almost as if in slow motion, onto the concrete. Now it has a hairline crack about six inches long. My question is is it done for, or will the metal expand when it gets hot and keep it water tight?

Pretty sure the crack will expand the hotter it gets.

Any welding shop can do it, or is there someone that specializes in that?

Welding cast iron is tricky. Not every shop can do it.

And on top of that, even a great weld on cast iron isn't always a sure thing. Pesky damn metal to weld. It can look and preform great for weeks or even years, and all of a sudden, pop.

It's done for baw. Even if you have it welded it will likely fail.

As mentioned, Cast Iron is a Bitch to weld. It has to cool very slow and it has to be Pre heated before you weld it. Even if done right it still may crack again. It's worth a shot if it's has any sentimental value, otherwise it may just be better to buy a new one. What size is?

Consider it done for. It's just a pot. If it's got sentimental value, do something else with it, but find a new pot to cook out of. People will tell you they can weld cast iron. Those people are lying to you and will not be able to put a lasting weld down.

Cast iron is a bitch to weld and it's cheap. Not worth it to try to save.

It's only a 4 gallon pot. Prolly be cheaper just to get another one. No sentimental value just a damn good seasoned pot.
