Preferably bourbon bars and hole in the wall Mexican or Japanese restaurants, but any suggestions are welcome. Thanks

One of the hotter somewhat newer restaurants in town in that area is Broken Spanish.
There are a few decent places in the L.A. live area near Staples.
I'm not terribly familiar with downtown however.
ETA - Here is a write up on Broken Spanish from the L.A.T.

Bottega Louie's for brunch. As far as bars I like the Golden Gopher and 7 Grand is an awesome whiskey bar.

My gf and I thoroughly enjoyed Sugarfish Sushi. They have multiple locations and it's not really a dive or hole in the wall. But it's good and it's a lot of food.

It's 10 miles from downtown LA Chateau Marmont is a great place and is full Rock N Roll history.
The bar is great and the food wasn't exceptional though it was good.
It's expensive.......think I remember a Newcastle being in the $10-11 range back in 2005
