regular Crown and Crown Reserve are crap, just normal Canadian blended whiskys, Cask 16 is aged in cognac barrels and is better than even the XR. it's about $70 a bottle but the only canadian whisky ive found thats worth the $$$$$

I actually really like Crown Reserve and the Cask 16. The XR doesn't do anything more for me for the price, though. Is it true that the only real claim to fame of XR is that it's aged in the barrels that survived the fire?

no they say that every bottle of XR contains whisky that survived the fire.... so I guess 1 drop of 90 year old whisky in a barrel of Crown makes it worth $130 a bottle...?????

Bumping because I had Crown Maple last night at a little dive bar on the Tickfaw. Has anyone else had or seen this? I thought I was pretty up on the different versions out there, including Crown Select (only available in Canada), but this was a new one on me. Actually was pretty good sipping on the rocks-kind of a novelty like the Makers Mark Mint Julep that they produce around Derby time every year. I sure as Hell don't need more whiskey OR bourbon in my overloaded stock, but I'd have to add a Maple if I ran across one.

If you're a NASCAR fan, drink Crown.

If you're not an idiot, don't drink Crown. It's mostly fricking vodka anyways.

I work at a liquor store in Oxford, BTW.

Not that one-tone BS bourbon. It's not bad, but it's certainly not great. You can do MUCH better for the price.

Crown Royal: Crappy Canadian whiskey dominant in the Southern USA. Aged around 3 years
Crown Royal Special Reserve: A 5-6 year old blend of Crown royal...still crap
Crown Royal black: Crappy Canadian Whiskey aged in heavy toasted and toasted head new american oak barrels
Crown Royal Cask 16: Aged like normal and finished with Cognac Barrels (used French oak with small amount of Cognac left in the wood)
Crown Royal XR: Red was from the Waterloo distillery and was a selection of the last barrels saved from the fire...Blue from the La Salle distillery. This is the oldest of all Crown Royal blends but still a mediocre product.
Crown Royal Maple: Only currently available in LA, this tastes like you added maple syrup to the product. Supposedly aged in Maple cured oak barrels. might taste good over pancakes as a topping like rum cake.

If you look up the fire of Waterloo distillery as well, I think it was only 15-20 years ago it caught fire so the XR really isnt that old. However, it is supposed to be all from the burnt down distillery, not just portions.

I saw all ages doing it while bartending years ago.

Crown was hands down the most popular whiskey served at high end and low end bars I worked.

My only problem with Crown and it's products is that it isn't worth the premium they charge.

There are many other blended Canadian whiskeys, that most couldn't tell the difference when mixed, that are half the cost of Crown.

Does it really matter if it is mixed with Coke? I don't drink much brown liquor anymore but if I do I mix it and prefer Crown over Beam (which fizzes) or Jack. If someone else is paying then I like Makers but I can't taste much difference when mixed.

Not at all. I don't care what it's mixed with, but there are several other Canadian blends that are virtually indistinguishable from Crown that are about half the price, and if you enjoy the taste of crown with coke might as well save yourself some cash.

These are very different bourbons/whiskeys, but when mixed with coke, the quality and subtleties of the bourbon/whiskey are lost in the mix.

Not reading whole thread........

Crown XR original formulation was with remaining spirits from the closed "Waterloo" distillery. I believe that has now run out and the formulation has been altered.

Crown Cask 16 is less rare (and less expensive). I preffer the Cask 16. I usually drink single malt scotch. I enjoy the Cask 16.

Cask 16 is awesome. Very smooth. Some of the best whiskey I've ever tasted.

I prefer bourbon, but I've got a buddy who was a Crown drinker and now only drinks R & R (rare & reserve i think) and says he can't taste the difference.

If you like the Cask 16 buy it now, I was told today by one of their salesmen that they will not be making it anymore......and I agree the Rich and Rare Reserve is extremely close in flavor profile to Crown Royal ...

Crown Royal is pretty low class crap, imo.
