Are publicly traded companies really getting in on this "crowd funding" stuff? How's that work exactly?

it works by passing on R&D budget on to the consumer. the rub is that they are now obligated to go to market, even if the concept turns to garbage

On the Opal thing, I got it for about half price of the now retail pricing.

I guess if they do a good enough job of keeping it separate and apart from their parent company.

Who knows? Hell, I don't really get the whole crowdfunding thing period. Let me INVEST in something if the idea is good enough.

Wow--an electric pot to do what water & coffee will do all by themselves in the fridge? No thx. I make cold-brewed all the time. 4 parts water:1part ground coffee & chicory. Wait; 12 hrs if you want to drink it straight, up to 24 hrs if you like a concentrate. Strain thru a paper filter.

At least with products, crowd funding is great for early adopters who want to try new try things at cheaper than retail price points. From the inventors perspective, it's great not having to give up more equity to get more funding. And it's a great marketing tool.

What I don't understand is crowd funding for nonprofits I could otherwise donate directly for some tax benefit.

Slight hijack, but only itemizing filers benefit from a charitable deduction for philanthropic gifts. Esp for small nonprofits, an online campaign through a crowdfunding source is easy to mount...and most modest-dollar donors can't take the deduction anyway.
