I have a standard Bodum French Press that is used every weekend and then once or twice during the work week. I always immediately rinse the carafe with cold water after dispensing the coffee. I'll unscrew and rinse off any grinds that fastened to the mesh filter or spring screen.

However, assuming it is oil residue, the carafe and filtering system leaves brown residue. I'm assuming I don't want to stick it in the dishwasher. Are there any cleaning material and/or tips you use to clean the press?

Why not? Cause of dishwashing soap? It's glass-- no different than a regular cup. This isn't cast iron

I hand wash my carafe with dish soap after each use. I've experienced no adverse effects

I rinse mine after each use and wash when I have a load going in the dishwasher.

Haven't noticed anything wrong.

It's dishwasher safe. I wash mine about once every two weeks to keep the stains from occurring.... or when I am too lazy to dump the grinds and it sits there for a few days.

Do you put the plunger/filter apparatus in the dishwasher as well?

Yes. I also put most of my knives in the dishwasher too. About the only thing I don't is cast iron. My wife bought glass storage containers because I would warp all of her Tupperware.

Turn off the heated drying cycle and that won't be a problem.
