Hate Cigar City. Haven't tried 1 beer of theirs that I like.

I didn't not realize that. I see it posted a fair amount in the FBD threads

So what beers do you like?

We're still behind the curve on that aspect of the market, IMO. There are a few places that really care, but far more that don't.
They will care once not caring affects their business. There are plenty of bars that don't care, wherever you go. I don't go to them. There are a lot of them that do care, and they make sure their customers know that they care. Hell, some of them post on their Facebook pages when they clean their taps.
Sometimes it's hard to tell. The Beermongers is a dump, but they clean their tap lines regularly, and beer from there tastes good because it's always fresh (partley because they only have 8 taps). Orenco Taphouse is spotless and immaculately clean all the time. You can tell they care about cleanliness.

Damn good question. Cigar City brews a lot of different styles well...

Oh, I'm sure. But this is the same circle we've gone around before -- most of the establishments here aren't dependent upon satisfying the mavens to keep the lights on.
There are plenty of bars that advertise their beer selection, but they also cater to very other clienteles that bring in the bulk of their income. Even Avenue Pub gets a nice boost from the late night crowd. It will have to be a culture change in the consumer before it starts leveraging the bars to change.

That culture change can start with the mavens. If you speak up to the bar owner about it, the worst that can happen is nothing changes. Craft beer has a lot of room for growth in NOLA, and the places that respect the beer will get that growth.
If you see a local bar that doesn't clean their lines with Ghost on tap, I would report it to Parish, as well. I'm sure Parish would rather see a bar that respects the beer get that keg. I don't know if the distribution works the same way, but I know some of the breweries up here have told the distributors to cut off some taprooms (or at least cut off the good stuff).

Yeah, I'm less and less excited about a brewery expanding to LA these days.
my, how things have changed
i think it has more to do with zero confidence in the current distribution model

So which brewery you think will close first ? It's only a matter of time IMO with all the new out of state beers coming in and in state breweries popping up everyday.

They need to ban the out of state beers until all of the local beer is sold out.
Posted on 3/14/16 at 2:37 pm to TigerWise
You wanna check out the new place soon, Wise?
Posted on 3/14/16 at 3:03 pm to TigerWise
Sounds like Urban South isn't too far away, or at least that was my impression

Soft opening next week, NOLA Krewe will be there.

Agreed. Gotta get all that Jockamo and Juke Joint off the shelves.

Honestly, I don't think you're that close to any of them closing. I don't see breweries really treading on each other down there. Even a brewery like Covington can survive by catering to the locals.
Even the worst brewpub makes better beer than BMC, and local BMC drinkers will sing praises of the local brewpub.

I think you underestimate the degree of loyalty to BMC...

You seem to know more about it than me. I just wonder who is drinking all these beers. People in Covington must buy that stuff up like crack because I never see anyone drinking it or posting it in the FBD. I guess the Chalmations are keeping 40 Arpent in business.

I don't. I do know that shitty breweries outnumber the good ones in Portland. As saturated as we appear to be, you would think there would be no room for mediocrity. Not so. People will support their neighborhood brewery, even if it sucks.

...which does very little to address the prevailing cocktail and BMC culture, really. I fully agree with you that there's room for craft beer to expand in NOLA, and Louisiana as a whole, but you're going up against something that's more deeply entrenched than people realize.
