I've never understood the hype for the place

Their duck gumbo is awful. I've tried it several times to see what the hype is about and now I don't bother. Chunks and chunks of undercooked veggies with very little "duck" and paper thin slices of sausage.
Agreed that all their food is average but you won't have a bad meal there. A competent cook can make everything on their menu, but that's not the point of dining out.

There are only a handful of great menu items, but if you stick to those and the beer, the atmosphere alone makes it one of the best places to eat and drink in the city.... speaking about the one by LSU of course.

I'm not even sure if there's duck in their duck gumbo. Someone who worked there told me it was chicken only.
I use the Chimes East almost exclusively for raw oysters. The do have a good off menu dish, that being a blackened alligator poboy which is fairly decent. Other than that, I really don't go there for food.
...and who's that dickbag who sits at the end of the bar like Norm from Cheers? I was actually sitting there eating and he showed up one day demanding me to move because he was a regular and that was his permanent chair. It's the only time that I've had a customer come into a restaurant and ask me to move.

Wow.
I've sat at the bar several times and watched the other customers try to "out loud" each other.

It's amazing too. All those good brews on tap and half of the bar will be drinking a domestic light beer.

Chimes East bar area is weird. Every time I've been alone, I'm by some weirdo "regular" who is getting housed at 1pm on a Sunday.
