Anyone else see this lately? Ask for the bill and they just bring you a card reader and tell you its $xyz and run the card. No itemized receipt to review etc…

Then you have to ask for a paper copy of the receipt as they don’t bring that after they run the card.

I’ve noticed this at a Walk On’s and at Mason’s Grill.

I need to see an itemized bill and what’s on it first. Annoying.

That was the norm when I went to Europe and I loved it. Glad that practice is finally making its way to the south.

In Europe, I feel like I always get an itemized receipt first though.

You know you don't have to give them your card. Right?

Obviously I don’t have to give the card then, but why do I have to now request an itemized bill to review when they come and stand there with a card reader? The push is to just pay and tip and you’ll just trust them. Ha.

Scroll through the reader. There is an option for that.

Ask for a receipt.

Really no need to over complicate this.

Way more issues can arise from them taking your card in the back.

Drago's has been using card readers at the tables for several years after someone was swiping card numbers in the back of the house. But they let you see an itemized bill before you pay. And you get a paper receipt. Same as the standard in Europe.

We go to Masons a good bit. They always give us the bill first. Then we get charged at the table.

Europe has been doing this for a long time without issues...They will give you an itemized receipt first if you simply request it, Im sure

I hate when they bring the card reader to the table and then stand right over you as you're trying to figure out the tip amount as they look over your shoulder. And they generally make the "custom amount" option harder to find. The default options usually start at 20% and go up from there. Really not a fan of this new trend.

Just went 2 weeks when this happened at Masons. It also had “extra tip”calculated there as well as “this is based off the taxable” amount. You don’t tip on tax. It’s not over complicating it to bring the paper bill with the reader and just leave it at the table or paper bill and then come back with the reader. Why bring the reader, then go back and get the bill? Or get a real system that can show you the bill at the same time you get the card reader presented to you.

I hand the server the card when I'm ready to leave.

Why? Because in my experience, they are much more careful with what goes on the bill.

Since doing it, I have never been billed for something I didn't order or receive.

If you can't afford to go out to eat, don't.

Anytime you go to a business lunch or dinner, you need an itemized receipt. You can ask your waiter/waitress for that. I'm also sure there's a way to see it digitally so you can confirm everything you need to see. It's your fault if you skip through everything and click the first things you see without asking questions.

That being said, I'm not a fan of BS charges to bills. I remember distinctly during the middle of COVID when restaurants started opening back up, we went to a place in Austin that decided to charge us 5% for a "COVID supplies fee" and it was never mentioned to us at all. We ended up complaining to management about it because we felt it should be something to address to patrons before coming in. I don't think it would've stopped us from going, but it just seems stupid and shady to just throw that in there. I understand. Restaurants took a huge hit during COVID, but just raise the damn prices instead of throwing on fees on top of fees.

Same sentiment applies to business who charge extra for using a credit or debit card. Sorry I don't feel like carrying around a bunch of dirty cash and change around to pay my bills and I enjoy my credit points.

Credit card companies do charge the merchants a small percentage (1-3.5%) on every transaction. But yeah, some companies should eat it to make up for the tax expense they avoid for not declaring 100% of their cash sales.

The first (and so far, only) time this happened was a couple of weeks ago at Rawz Bistro in Youngsville. My friend and I had shared a tuna tower appetizer, and also ordered our own entrees.

I noticed that the tuna tower was described as sitting atop sushi rice, so I asked our server if the rice could be left out. She asked if I wanted more snow crab in its place, and yep, I did. We did not discuss added cost, but I was fine with an up charge. Here is the app:

It was, excuse my language, fricking delicious. Later I saw a pic of the app as it comes, with rice, and this one looked mo’ betta.

It was worth an up charge, but I don’t know what it was because they brought out the card reader and no receipt. I paid with cash, anyway, but was a little flustered about not seeing anything itemized. Our server was a charming schmoozer who just smoothly got us out the door, receiptless.

I’ll just be better prepared next time. The food was delicious. The sauces on the app were memorable.

I eat out because I can afford to. Pure and simple. Just don’t expect me to take your word for it that the bill is $XYZ and “trust you” that everything is correct. That’s the dumbest reply I’ve seen in a long time.

Maybe some of you just haven’t encountered this yet. Good luck. If you’re bothered by cc charges or BS add on’s then you actually agree with me, whether you realize it or not.

You are bitching about a first world problem that you have made a problem only for yourself. Ask for the full receipt. Move on. These payment process machines send an itemized copy. If something is messed up, it's fixable.

Living such a cynical way of life must be exciting.
