Staying in Hoover for work.
First off, is Hop City my best bottleshop bet? Is there anything in Hoover worth visiting?

Also need dinner for tomorrow night. Been 7 years since I've spent meaningful time in B'ham, so I'm lost on the restaurant scene now. Willing to shoot up to Birmingham for a transcendent meal, but if all things are equal a rec in Hoover is preferred. Type of restaurant being hip, inventive, upbeat. Going to be with some other guys from work, so if there is a "Tuesday hot spot" would like to know about that also.

Shipley's Donuts. Other than that...

"Birmingham" is where it's at. Pick a scene: Avondale, Lakeview or 5 Points.

Your answer is Ovenbird in Pepper Place.

Hop City is the best bottleshop. J Clyde is a bar with a great beer selection. All of the breweries (Good People, Avondale, Trim Tab, etc) are great places to relax with a drink.

For a meal, it depends how you want to go. Highalnds Bar and Grill is the most famous restaurant. It's more casual side, Chez Fon Fon, is really great and has possibly the best burger in town. Here are a few other choices:

Carrigan's - downtown with a rooftop bar and inventive bar food (great burger)
El Barrio - hip Mexican place downtown
Gianmarco's - great local Italian place in Homewood, has a wine bar
Bettola - hip Italian place in the Pepper Place area
Slice - probably the best pizza in town, Lakeview area
Hotbox at Parkside - a trailer serving Asian street food in the back yard of a bar (a converted house). Really cool place for a late night snack
Flip - best burgers in town. At the Summit

Birmingham has an exceptional restaurant scene. I could name a lot more places if there is a certain type of food you are looking for. I don't know any great places in Hoover.

I agree with most of these reccs.

There is probably somewhere in Hoover with decent food and a good happy hour scene on a Tuesday. I don't know where though. Maybe Firebirds? Cajun Steamer? Don't know.

For fine dining in BHM, go to Highlands, Hot n Hot, or Bottega. There is a good chance of a happy hour scene at either Highlands or Bottega (cafe side). I think Tuesday is Highlands but I don't really know.

Gianmarcos is exceptional but not somewhere I would go with a group of male colleagues.

If getting out a bit, agree with El Barrio or Carrigans. I don't care for Slice but the owners have a place called Sky Lab around the corner that is good (food and drinks).

Disagree with Flip Burger. Nothing special. Best burger in town is at Chez Fon Fon (could get a drink at Highlands and dinner here).

Michaels was mentioned by another poster. It is subpar in quality, value, service, and ambience but otherwise is fine.

Breweries in order of preference: Trim Tab, Cahaba, Good People,...................................................................Avondale (I really dislike their beer). The first three are good and lots of people put GP number one. I'm not an IPA guy so I prefer the ales etc at Trim Tab.

Have a good trip.

Also, Hop City is the best bottle shop. There are a couple of smaller places but Hop City is the best.

Depends on how much you want to spend. Don't waste your time in Hoover.

Highlands remains one of the best meals I have ever eaten in my life. Prepare the pocketbook. . .

Chez Fon Fon is immediately next door and much less expensive and incredibly good as well.

Hop City has an incredible beer selection and honestly, if you want wine, try Western Supermarket in Mountain Brook. The selection is great and the prices are quite reasonable.

Hops and Vine is the only other bottle shop worth visiting, but I'd recommend Hop City if you can make it there.

Good People is a must. Avondale Brewing is also worth checking out especially if they have live music. They also have a new Sour Room located on their block. While there, get food from Saw's Soul Food, Post Office Pies, or Melt.

For food, El Barrio and Carrigans get my approval. Shiki for asian/sushi.

The earth and turf burger at Flip cooked medium rare is amazing. I'd put it up against the Fon Fon burger. Jack Brown's also has really good burgers, as does Carrigan's.

Also wondering what and where y'all picked, OP.

After scrolling through today's news, I was at first concerned about my enthusiasm to send you up to Birmingham -- Underage drinkin' and packin' -- but it appears the mayhem also visited beautiful Hoover -- 13 yr olds bringing BB Gun heat.

Enjoy our food, but keep your head on a swivel.
