Loaded question.
There are so many variations of right answers.
You need to decided if you want to eat at some hole-in-the-wall restaurants, some famous ones, some owned and run by celebrity chefs, memorable ones with great views, what kind of budget etc.

Pizza is simple plain and great by the slice all over town.
Craft was great.
Le Cirque is amazing.
Rainbow Room at the top of Rockefeller center was very memorable.
So many others to name but one of my favorites was in Little Italy just walking the street and stopped in a complete dive. Great food at a great price.

The place in Little Italy I ate at was around the corner from Old St. Patrick's Cathedral.

Expensive:

Gramercy Tavern--great food and incredible service.

Cheaper options for lunch/dinners you don't want to spend alot of money:
Gray's papaya
Joe's pizza for slices (around bleeker and 6th ave)
John's pizza on bleeker
Corner Bistro for burgers and McSorley's beer
Les Halles--steak frites for 20 bucks
Korean BBQ on 32nd street

I didn't mention a pizza place by name because pretty much everyplace I tried it in the city was excellent. I'm sure you have your own personal recommendation. The Rainbow room was a special occasion and the restaurant fit perfectly. A good friend of mine was the Sous Chef at Craft at the time I ate there and yes he is a life long New Yorker. Since I was up there visiting friends, they happened to recommend that a group of us go to Le Cirque. Again they are born and raised in NYC and wanted to take us there since they themselves enjoy it. It was great, no doubt.

And that bring me to my hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Little Italy. You fail to explain yourself why you call it "italy, errr, chinatown" since it most certainly wasn't run by Chinese and definitely wasn't in an area that looked like Chinatown. My recommendation was to find these type of places if time permits because they usually are hidden gems which this was.

New York is just like New Orleans in the fact that everyone has their favorites. Not everyone agrees and in both cities, you could spend years eating at restaurants and not eat at all of them.

Sorry you are annoyed but it is probably because you are an annoying person. I stated my opinion based on my experiences and stand by them. I also stand by my statement that you are a moron.

Craft is a good restaurant, my mistake.
Rainbow Room has a great interior, bad food. You liked it because of your "special" occasion.
Hot dogs are similar everywhere, pizza is not. John's and Joe's pizza is memorable and way better than the average place.
Those crappy restaurants on Mott are expensive and awful, and Little Italy has been overrun by Chinatown. Not fun.
I am neither annoying or moronic (wife and mother agree), but I only give advice on things I know about.

Just relax and tell us where to eat at Disneyworld. Does Emeril have a new Gumboland roller coaster restaurant.

Listen, you squabbling primadonnas. As TigerChef (not self-dubbed but granted to me from Mike VI himself) I am the final arbitrator on this debate. Helo: you sound like a nice guy and are trying hard but you live in Sprawlsville USA. Unless it is a new Outback, you have no domain. The only thing you'd know about New York would be what you heard from the transplanted snowbirds in Kissimmee. Beezerboy76: We know you know stuff about your adopted town. Nice.
