I don't think it's worth it. Reviews aren't great on that functionality. But the smokers are fantastic.

I would not pay for WiFi. You are not going to change temps that often. That's the best part of a pellet grill. Turn it on and come back later. I have the smallest Traeger but want a Rec Tec. Should have jumped on the red ones a few months ago for $900

I have a MAK 2 Star General and have literally put 1.5 tons of pellets through it. I did change out the igniter to the new style which has a lifetime warranty. Also has a smoking box on the side for low temp smokes that makes excellent jerky.

Camp Chef is a very good and affordable pellet smoker. I use mine at least once every 2 weeks for almost 2 years and have never had any problems.

Anyone with a wifi Green Mountain? Not sure the wifi is worth the extra $$$,

I have the Jim Bowie...stainless lid and wifi. Is the wifi worth the extra money? Meh...it was fun to play with initially and in the app you can build profiles for several different meats. But I don't use it anymore (wifi w/ app).

I would say if you're into building an entire profile for your meats you'd probably like it. I'm always trying different techniques and rubs and temps and pellet flavors that the profiles are useless for me.

That is debatable, the MAK Pellet Boss controller is hands down the best controller available.

Perhaps but I have no idea how to quantify that, I set my Yoder where I like and it never wavers more than a few degrees either way.

How can a controler be better than that?

The Maks looked good to me when I was looking around but they are a much thinner material and I decided against them on that basis.

By being programmable and being able to utilize the internal temp probes to vary the programs.

As far as metal thickness When you go with 304 stainless you don’t have to have the thickness of cold rolled steel.
Yoder makes an excellent smoker and people like different things. I was just pointing out when someone says they are the best it is not really that cut and dried. Kind of like saying GM trucks are better than other brands nobody can argue against that it’s just a fact but pellet grills there is a little more room for debate.

Yep. Mak and Memphis are by far the best. If you can afford it, those are incredible from what I've heard.

Traegar might actually be worst. They invented the pellet grill. But they were lazy and didn't bother developing it any further. Once their patent expired, they got left in the dust. They're trying to catch up, but have a mediocre controller for the price. And they're notoriously bad for temperature swings.

Rec Tec and Green mountain seem to get the best reviews and hype as far as mid range models. I'm tempted to get the Green mountain Davey Crockett just for camp trips.

I bought a Louisiana grill LG700 at Costco for $600. It was reasonably priced, and works well. I'm pretty happy with it, but it's still entry level. I went to my local Costco this week, and they're selling an LG900 with a cold smoke box attached to the side for $500. It's $900 on any other sore without the cold smoker box. I'm mad that I bought mine early. Because that is 100% the best deal for a large pellet grill under $1000.

Yeah, that thing is $500 right now.

Costco was charging at least $300 higher when they first got it months ago, after I already had bought mine. If my parents didn't raise me right, or if it was Walmart, I would return mine and buy that one immediately.

Here's a pellet grill forum on Reddit. You'll find a lot of good info on it.

pellet grills - Reddit

I can promise you one thing, you won't regret buying one. They are fricking amazing. I love not waking up at 4am on Saturday to check the coals. Especially as I've gotten older, and good sleep has gotten harder to get.

The smoke is actually not overly strong. Some people dislike them because they aren't as smokey as a stick burner. I like heavy some on some things, but not others.

So I got something called the A-Maze-N pellet smoker. It's basically a maze shaped mesh basket that you fill with pellets and light one side. It will smoke for hours, and dramatically increase the amount of smoke you get.

My blue eyes just turned green. I bet that thing is a dream to cook on. That an old time pit master's worst nightmare. Now any idiot is capable of making competition level BBQ.

How consistent is the heat spread throughout the barrel? I've been meaning to get some white bread and do the test. I've called large batches of wings on it, so I have a pretty good idea where my hot and cold spots are. They're still consistent compared to gas grills I've had in the past.

I agree with everything CCTider said. I own a Traeger tailgater only because I got 50% off on one. I wouldn’t pay full price for what it is. The metal is thin and the temp swings vary greatly. Now that said, it works and it works without issue even with the temp swings.

I learned on a Weber Smokey Mountain which I still own and am also comfortable using stick burners but, pellet smokers are so convenient that I hardly use anything else.

Traeger has a cool name, cool stuff and everything else but, even the ones at Walmart and Sams look to be better quality. I haven’t really looked into them so the internals may not be, but they definitely seem more heavy duty.

My brisket from the other day on the daniel Boone. Lost a little bark on the butcher paper and i rendered a bit too much fat, but overall still a really good hunk of meat.

I've got a 22 WSM in my attic right now. I love it. But it's so damn big, it takes a lot of work. Pellet smokers changed everything.

I just slept 8 hours, woke up, and took off my beef ribs (2-4 hours earlier than I expected, but it's made a great breakfast). Slept for another 2 hours. I've still got a BBQ rubbed butt and a jerk rubbed butt still cooking that are at 185. I'll take them off at 200-205°, and will wrap them for at least an hour before pulling.

And all I've had to do is push a button, and light an extra pound of pellets in a mesh basket. They're stupidly easy to use.

Does anyone have recommendations for pellets brands of pellets? My city didn't have great selection. Home Depot and Lowe's don't sell them. Walmart carries multiple varieties of Pit Boss, Costco sells Traegar pellets, and Dicks carries Lumberjack. That's all I can find locally.

I'm not opposed to going online. But the sites I've checked are insanely expensive. No big deal with just using an A-Maze-N pellet smoker. But to use high dollar pellets for a 12 hour cook can get very expensive.
