Why would you think you don't need to pay tax on the service charge?

$23 meal + 10% tax = $25.30
$23 meal + $6 charge + 10% tax = $31.90

Then you tip. Whatever you want...including the amount of $0.

So you are paying $6.60 for someone to drive to the restaurant, validate the order is correct, drive to your house, and bring it to your door.

I don't know about you, but that round trip (gas, time) is worth the $6.60 to me.

Use it in Sulphur at work at least once per week. Definitely worth it, IMO

I think the service is fine and should work well for most people. In theory, I don't like idea gratuity post service charge because it's not how I calculate tips in restaurant, I go off the pre-tax amount. In practice, it's squabbling over a few cents/dollars so I usually round up and add a bit. But that is because it's my choice,

So is gratuity % decided/applied before delivery or after?

The app shows a 20% gratuity, but you can slide the amount up or down. If you leave it as is, that's what is added. It's all figured at the time of order and paid for before delivery. I think you can choose not to add gratuity and tip the driver with cash, but I haven't done that.

The gratuity is the one piece of this transaction you do control. I normally lower the amount because I never tip 20% on take out.

I imagine they start it there hoping that people won't notice and just hit "submit".

I think the 20% is for the restaurant. The driver should be tipped by you.

Nope - according to the FAQs for delivery orders the full gratuity goes to the driver.

Hey guys I work for waitr (delivery driver). There is a $5 charge When you order. $2.50 of it goes to waitr, and $2.50 goes to us drivers. We usually can deliver only 2 per hour here in Baton Rouge. So that's $5 per hour for us plus any and all tips go to us as well. A normal tip for us is usually 20% gratuity. The service is worth it more on both ends if the orders are larger. The restraunt I assumes gets nothing more than the extra benefit of more sales and advertisement. Hope this helps clarify things.

YEP - I live in Denham Springs and have used them several times for various restaurants. The only time I had an issue , it was the restaurant's fault and that was only the first time. It was made right & the waitr folks are great. You DO need to know that there is a flat $5 delivery fee - only $2.50 goes to the driver and the gratuity goes to the driver, so I always give a little cash too - they do not make minimum wage and no benefits, gas money or assistance for vehicle wear & tear. If you have any questions go check it on GlassDoor and a couple of other places. Most of them like the job (if it is a second one & the delivery locations are good.) Overall - well worth it to me and good experience over the past year.

The restaurant is also charged a percentage on every order. Much like VISA charges every merchant accepting the card. Many restaurants are starting to balk at the percentages.

TBH Waitr blows compared to UberEats. UberEats has a lower service fee and I can tip after the delivery not before. It’s ridiculous to ask me to tip before my food is delivered, and defeats the whole purpose of tipping.

It isn't a lower service fee for the restaurant. If you really like the place, use waitr. Waitr only charge 15% while uber eats offered us the discounted rate of 28%
