Looking at the cork won't tell you if the wine has been tainted by TCA, or is "corked". I've also opened plenty of wines with corks that were totally fricked, wine soaked all the way to the end, crumbling, covered in mold, that were just fine. The only way you'll know if the wine is bad, corked, stored poorly, etc, is if you taste it.

Someone who knows needs to out them so others can laugh. I have a serious envie now to go to Mathernes an go on a French bottle search.
