LINK

just one day after its open, annas has closed.

this one got a lot of headlines for its livable wages, and no tipping policy. apparently paying the servers (or rent) was not actually part of that plan.

I found the problem

gastropub with no booze

Really this sounds like a case of a guy running off with cash. Unfortunately that is more common than people realize.

Sounds like a pretty good scam there.

Like a gastropub with no liquor could possibly succeed

What in the flying frick?

Don't they know what "pub" means?

Sucks for the employees who were scammed.

What a lose/lose situation.
In no way would ownership recoup any amount of initial investment funds in one week of business.
Staff absolutely gets screwed, but this has little to do with them making $15/hr and no tips. Many places put credit tips on paychecks these days for proper income tax reporting. The staff would've been out that money in either case.
Vendors, landlords, city utilities, local/federal taxes all lose as well if there's no restitution.
The amount of capital necessary to start a business pales in comparison to whatever monies he left with.
I'm just being cautionary to the public in saying that this has anything to do with no tipping.

But seriously, a gastropub with no alcohol??
WTF is that?
It's like calling Galley Seafood a steakhouse.

ill note i only mentioned it as that is part of what got the space a lot of attention the last few weeks. Figured it would ring more bells than just the name alone

that, and not specifically the alcohol, but the lack of self awareness and common sense, probably permeated the plan with other issues too.

That location has not had a liquor license for decades. Its the former home of Singho Thai. The neighborhood is against any new alcohol licenses of any type, which led to Thai moving to its new location on Elysian Fields. That makes 2 restaurants that have opened there since Thai moved. The other one was a Ramen noodle place that lasted about 3 months.

I have always wondered about the leases on the buildings. Do they just walk away from them? Wouldn't you think they would have a personal guarantee with the degree of failures in this industry. I see restaurants in BR close pretty fast all the time.
