I have not had this problem with mine. Sounds like the Acorn you used had some sealing problems. Which is a common problem with the Acorn. But, if you get one that seals up properly it is money.

To the OP it is def worth $250. Just get one in a box and take your time and put it together by the book and you should be good to go.

Mine had some seal issues at the lower vent, but I went to work on it with some high temp sealant and it got a lot better

My husband has been using a Weber kettle for almost 40 years. He bought the Akorn a couple of months ago and is in love with it. The best steak I've ever had was cooked on it. Anyway, he says he'll never go back.

I have 2 of them. Well worth the $250. I've had several 8 hour smokes on 1 chimney full of lump.

Complaints -
If you don't keep it under cover, get a cheap cover. The ash dump will literally fill up with water when it rains.

The warming rack is flimsy and will break.

It isn't fully air tight. I can completely shut off the top and bottom dampers and it still gets enough air to hold a temp for a long slow smoke... not a complaint so much for me but have heard many complaints about that.

I was looking at that one when I bought mine. I ultimately went with a Visions Grill because I figured if I was spending 299 I may as well spend 300 more and get a ceramic grill that I knew I wanted and is more sturdy... Just my thought process, but have heard great things about the acorn.

I like to use a chimney starter, lump charcoal, and I use the weber lighter cubes in the chimney starter to light the charcoal.

Nothing else is really needed

This. A 70$ pizza stone isnt necessary. I just bought a pizza plate from walmart (8$) and it works fine as a heat deflector

Heres the thing with the Akorn vs BGE that ive noticed, the BGE will a certain temp longer and more precise but the Akorn will hold a temp within 20 degrees of what you want for a comparable amount of time. We used an Akorn and a BGE for a BBQ comp on the 4th of july and the BGE held around 225 for a solid 7 hours. The Akorn would hold 260-290 for 6 hours. I do find that the BGE is a little easier to bring the temp down if its gets a little hot than the Akorn.

the bge is 3 times the price i would hope it would be better. Ive had my akorn about 2 1/2 years and love it.

What did you use? Mine pretty much maintains where I want it if I babysit it, but if I step away from it the temp might get a few 5-10 degrees higher than I want it.

One of the other things i've learned is not to adjust the venting as a reaction to what the cooker is doing, rather try to anticipate what it will do. Once I learned that, it worked a lot better, but I may have a slight seal problem.

Totally agree. And with the two side by side you could clearly see the differences in how they are manufactured, but for the price the Akorn is where its at IMO.
