Section of river road downtown closed.

Apparently they couldn't control the water flow enough coming from the Hollywood casino. About 300 yards shut off.

I thought at section River Road downtown had been closed off for a week now? At least a few of the lanes.

Its been shut down to keep people from going down and sight seeing and tying up traffic and generally getting in the way.

No, we closed this section of roadway from State Capitol Drive to North Third Street from water backing up onto the roadway and also from the Water Table pressure.
Sight seeing issues are everywhere and we can't help that. However, that is NOT why we closed this portion of River Rd.
The closures were necessary for high water flood protection and prevention activities from the high stage of the Mississippi River. Catch Basins and manholes in the area were covered with visqueen and sandbags to prevent flood water from flowing from the subsurface drainage structures into the roadway. The Baton Rouge River Station Gage was at 41.5’ and within 2’ of the top of some of the catch basin grates at the time of closure.
This will remain closed throughout the ENTIRE duration of the high water event well into the month of June.

I'm an Engineer for LA-DOTD...been at it for 11 years. We are very overwhelmed. I check on TD from time to time to help separate from the madness. I am also assisting in a lot of efforts at the main GOHSEP-EOC in getting materials and equipment all over the state for various missions and operations.

From what I know they are holding up just fine. What you are talking about it backwater coming from the subsurface drainage. This is happening all over the place. I will make sure our District knows about the issue on LA 327 though.

I already received a response from our Assistant District Administrator:
"This is at Duncan Point right in front of Farr Park on River Road just south of Brightside. A section of seepage next to where the Corps is watching their stuff so the Corps is aware of it. Probably 20' long. I would recommend "Our Area Engineer" have someone check it daily."
So we're aware of it. Thanks for mentioning it though.

Quick question I live right by the horse park on river road in Lake Beau Pre (trying to sell) where you just mentioned the seepage. I am going to Houston for work next week, but I am nervous about leaving while this is happening and leaving my wife there. I am thinking about postponing my trip, am I overreacting?

Well of course I am! Always here to help my friend. I meant the above in the nicest way possible .. hard to see that in black and white. Clearly I didn't want to have to type the massive acronym out. I'm glad I don't work there permanently and have to jam that somehow on a business card.

I understand your concern, and please don't feel you are over-reacting. This is the worst flood event most of us will ever see in our lifetimes, and thus there are many concerns to address.
To answer your question, enjoy your trip to H-town. This area will be fine and the levees are just fine here. Seepage happens all over the place as well as sandboils. They are all well known and being addressed throughout the entire levee system all the way to Arkansas. No worries.
