WDSU in NOLA is reporting that a second bay was opened last night and 2 more bays will be opened today. I thought they were not going to open the spillway that fast.

They announced yesterday that they would follow this plan. The Corps is reacting to river conditions. I thought they would probably accelerate it a little based on the level readings at Natchez.
If you want to do the math, subtract 620 kcfs from the flow at Natchez. That is the amount hitting Morganza. Then subtract 1.5 million (the max flow they want going past BR) from that. What remains is the amount they have to pull off at Morganza.
If the predicted flow at Natchez goes beyond 2.72 million, we have a problem. It does not look like it is going to get close to that. In the immortal words of the cover to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Don't Panic.

Thanks Judge,
I watched the press conference with the corps commander and I thought he said they were going to leave one bay open yesterday and then open one or two today to give wildlife a chance to seek high ground. I did hear him say that the river would dictate their schedule so I guess the river is dictating.

Don't understand subtracting 620 from Natchez flow. But the rest makes sense.
Thanks for all the info.

620cfs can go through old river control structures between natchez and morganza . . .that's where the difference is

Thanks
Never really knew how the ORCS and Morganza worked.

Looks like the graph scale has been changed from water depth at the outflow channel to "gage height".
From the levels reported it looks like they are using a base of 34.7 feet, probably on the north end at the junction of the north levee and the structure.
