I always thought Vicksburg sat up above the river on the bluffs - hence the reason that Grant/Sherman couldn't take it from the west side and why it was so hard for Union boats to move past it prior to the siege during the Civil War.

Are the bluffs really not that high, or did the levees, etc. bring the city closer to river level?

Most of the City is on the bluffs. From the River on the climb up that hill is pretty steep

Most of the city is on a high bluff, what is flooding is casino areas and the industrual areas on Levee Street.

That "was" the mobile HQ for a barge company that was moved to this area because they thought they were safe. It looks like two double wides connected end to end. Am going back tomorrow to get more pics as it is supposed to crest in Vicksburg tomorrow/Saturday. I will update thread with more pics

i actually helped build that wooden flood gate that cuts levee st. mind if i steal some of the photos you took?
