Sticky needed regarding use of our work?

With all that has transpired recently regarding the unauthorized use of Yurintroubl's Heisman piece I'm wondering if it might be a good idea for us to get a statement added to the top of the Fark Board regarding a policy against use of our artwork without our permission.

I know I'm opening up a large can of worms bringing this up, but we probably need something posted. Additionally, I reviewed the policy statement of Tiger Droppings and don't really see anything that touches this subject.

Of course, COMMON SENSE is really the guideline people should use regarding the question of, "I wonder if maybe I ought to get permission to use this piece before I get it printed and distributed to put on national TV?" Unfortunately we live in a world where common sense is often disregarded. I'll also be the first to go on record saying that even with a policy statement, people are going to do whatever they feel they are entitled to do. However, I believe we need something posted prominently regarding this topic.

As Yurintroubl and Tim Dallinger (who also has had a similar issue with the use of his work) have commented, they would have probaby been happy to give permission to use their work. I believe most of us feel the same way and would grant permission for the use of our work.

Enough of my rant. My suggestion to Chicken and the administrators is the following:

1.) Post a prominent policy regarding the unauthorized use of ANY artwork particularly on the Fark Board but also on other areas of Tiger Droppings.

2.) Ammend the policy statement under Guidelines/FAQ to address this topic.

Will doing this solve the problem? For honest people - Yes; Dishonest people - No. But we should try to do something about it. Already I see a lot more posters adding their name to their work. I encourage everyone to do that even though Yurintroubl's name was removed before it was reproduced. The fact that someone removed Yurintroubl's name proves the person who did this knew they were ripping off the work.

If we don't try to hit this issue hard right now, I'm concerned more incidents like this will continue. And if it continues, the end result will probably be most of us will stop posting here. I'd HATE for that to happen because this has been a tremendous place for some very talented individuals to congregate and learn from each other.

How do the rest of you feel about this topic?

Has "yurintroubl" stopped posting? I haven't seen or heard anything from her in a couple of days it seems.

I'm still here... Just been working a bunch and have been less pumped up about farking than usual.

Quite frankly - Still waiting for the other shoe to drop on a couple other pieces showing up all over the web... Hate thinking about plastering "sample" across everything that I feel has merit.

The "Farkers Unite" thread has gone a long way to restoring what I feel was taken from me.

I've got a couple days off after today... Good chance I'll be back farking the good fark.

ETA:

It goes without saying that I agree with Catahoula regarding AT LEAST an amendment regarding "use of work" and other Farkers Rights.

i know of the hours that you fine posters place into your work, which is why whenever troubl had shared her talents with me, i ed and ed and ed again, even though that didn't seem like enough gratitude for her awesome efforts. but the anonymity this site offers almost excludes any of us from compensation or recognition.

troubl is so humble that she probably was just pleased to see her creativity showcased on such a stage as tiger stadium and cbs, as i know i felt pissed, but proud, when i saw it.

when we recognize what originates on this site, it makes us feel better that we "know" the originator of the concept from here.

to the creative people on this particular board, who provide more goodwill and laughs on this site per post than any other board on this site. i look forward to more people from all over the country sending me emails months after i've seen them here first (like they have in the past), even though they have no idea what "germans" means

I have seen some of my work on College Gameday before and it doesn't bother me. In fact, GameStop in the mall once put a LSU NCAA 06 (I think?) cover on a game without my permission to help sell games in there store. Doesn't bother me one bit. It's the internet, I put the work on here to share with other people.

I don't think anybody cares about using it for personal use.

As in it would be okay to use an image from here to turn into a fathead and hang on your wall, but not okay to take it and use it as the background image for a website or use it in some type of advertisement (public display with misleading notions of the origin).

Agreed, this is always my first stop on TD each day. I need more time to prepare myself for the insanity of the other boards.

Many of us do. And now even more people have started adding signatures. Yurintroubl's piece had her signature on it. Either the person who pulled it off the board removed it or had the print shop remove it.

One could argue that you probably didn't get permission to use the photos that you fark.

That being said, If it is brought to my attention that someone is using your work, without permission, then I would be more than happy to take care of it. I've had several posters try to use my avatar as theirs, so I understand where you're coming from.

ETA: If you guys are talking about someone using your work outside of this board........there is nothing that can be done.
