ETA: Super 2 will not play into it. I believe he's already on the 40 man roster.

If Taveras is on the 40-Man roster his clock has started. If not they could be waiting on Super 2.

I just checked. The Cardinals added Taveras to their 40-man roster on November 20, 2013, so his clock has started already and Super 2 isn't a factor.

Hmmmm

Well Polanco is on the Pirates 40 man too. You sure they don't have to be on the active 40 man?

being on the 40 man roster doesn't put you on the 25man major league roster.

It just means he is signed to a major league contract.

Correct. Now there could be FA ramifications to not being on the 25 man roster (outside of future arbitration).

being on the 40 man roster counts as having a major league contract and counts as an option year, but it doesn't go against super 2 or free agency

you're a free agent if you have at least 6 years service time on the active roster (or dl)

you're arbitration eligible if you have at least 3 years service time or are in the top 22% of people between 2 and 3 years of service time

That's right. I was thinking about 40-man and the roster ramifications(having to drop someone to add him). So basically, they could buy another year by keeping him down. That's not something the Cardinals usually do though. And like I said, they are contenders. I think it mostly involves his ankles. Then again, it's not my money.

Taveras, without a doubt.

He'll be starting in CF within a few weeks.

Healthy again and just destroying the ball right now. Getting some last experience on CF with Grichuk up and then here he comes. It'll be mid May maybe sooner.
