Standings Tiebreakers Discussion

Should head to head record mean anything when it comes to a tie in the standings? The default tiebreaker is usually total points, but that means team A could beat team B twice in the regular season and lose the playoff spot because team B has more points. Our league has an ongoing debate regarding this issue. Thoughts?

total points
this is the best barometer of how good a team is. you could beat someone once because their squad is ravaged by bye weeks

In one of my leagues, intra division tie breakers are division record and then points. This works since we should play everyone in our division twice.
Between divisions, it's total points. This was done to minimize the possible advantage a team could have if one division is weaker in a given year.
In your case, I understand the idea of the head-to-head tiebreaker but I'd rather judge a team by their entire season instead of one game.

IMHO it should be the overall points. If you have the same record then the team with the most points had the better season. Beating them head to head doesn't prove anything because unlike in an actual football game you have no bearing on how many points they score. You just caught them that week.

Total points is the only acceptable way to handle it.

The point of a tiebreaker is to put the better of the two teams in the playoffs. In real football, the best way to do it is Head-to-head because there is no other way to really know who is better. Can't go off points scored or points against because the team you play each week actually effects how many points you score. But in fantasy football, your opponent has zero effect on how many points you score. It's all up to how good your team is.
So, points scored is the best way to settle a tie in fantasy football.
