He wants to start this week and is asking for votes. What are your thoughts on this after the season has begun? Whatever defense we have will get points for return yards on punt and kickoff returns

No point changes after the draft IMO.

Not a chance.
It would need to be a 100% vote for that to happen.

Your league doesn't have waivers and this is what you're worried about

For defenses that's stupid.

For players I think they should probably get something for return yardage...but not so much that it really becomes a strategy. 1 pt every 25 yards or something like that

The first thing I have to say is that giving your defense points for return and kickoff yards is one of the dumbest rules I've ever heard. It's one thing for an individual player, but for a defense? Talk about an unpredictable and dumb stat...

In general regarding rule changes during the season - I don't like it. I think this stuff should be worked out before the year, and any changes should be made for next year. Best way to do this is start talking about it during the middle of this season (because let's face it, no one is going to care in April).

The only caveat to that would be if every member of the league wanted a change. In that case, I'm fine with it, if everyone is for it than there's no issue. This usually happens to correct a mistake.

As an example, I was in a league a few years back that we had agreed to switch from full point scoring to decimal scoring for that year. After week 1 the commissioner that he forgot to put in decimal scoring. The commissioner approached the whole league after week 1 that he wanted to make the change, recognizing that it would change scores for week 1 (though luckily no outcomes). However, he didn't want to do it unless we were all on board. Everyone was on board and we did it. Things like that are fine.

But in general, no mid season rule changes unless everyone is for it.

My thoughts are that he knew he would do this and drafted accordingly

Absolutely not. With that knowledge one may have altered their drafting of players based upon whether they were in line for return yards or not. It may have been a tie breaker in many close choices. At this point it is too late.

Like the others have said, no point changes after the draft.

If it has 100% support, OK fine, but I still don't like it.

You can't change league rules like that after the draft. It changes the entire strategy of how everything works, and I would immediately suspect that someone is trying to gain an advantage because of how their roster happened to be built.

Adding anything after the season has begun is BS.

You can't do that sort of thing after the season has started. If he wants to take a vote on it, so it can be implemented next season, that's one thing...but to make the change now is wrong.

No. If anything, the individual player that is returning kicks could get points. Its rare enough in the NFL for these guys to be major offensive contributors anyway.

If defense gets it, there will be some major arbitrary scoring because most kicks not returnable.

If it is for any amount of money, I say no way to changing scoring rules during season
